Default 10.5" inchers speak up

Have any of you guys (or gals) ran a 275/30 or a 285/30 on a 19 X 10.5" rim?
I had 295/30's on but the wheel offset caused the outer part of the sidewall to rub the fender. The 275/285's having a narrower section width will help to prevent the rub, trying to get a concensus if this is a bad idea or not.

Some quesitons if you have had 275-285/30's on a 10.5" wheel:

How does it look, the tire to rim relation?
Does it look like the rim will scrape the ground?
Any adverse affects?
Would you do it again?
Is the tread wear pattern uneven or abnormal in the center?
Did the techs have a hard time getting the bead to seat?

(Pics would be nice from the rear or aft looking forward down the side). TIA Cory

that would be a tough one... I think yoo need to look at the specs of some tire manufacturers and go with the smaller width spec. Eg I know Bridgstone has a narrow 265 width vs Pirelli... The bridgestone looked liked it was strectched on a 10" rim. I run 285/30 and it is not bad at all... in fact the 2002+ models went with this size out of the factory.
So I would go with the narrowest 275/285 you can get and maybe even roll the fenders, then you might be able to get it w/o rubbing.
But honestly, if the wheel is past the fenders it is the wrong offset, IMHO. GL

Really? The factory used 285/30's on a 10.5"? That was an 18" inch rim though right?

the factory used 285/30/18, on 10" rim....285 is the same width wether it is 10 or 10.5

COry - go to Tire Rack and find teh tire you are considering (make and model) and view the "specs" of that particular tire. The site will list the rim with range (something like 9" - 10.5") and a Measured rim width (10") which would be the optimal rim width. You will find that tires of the same size have less or more flexabiliy in rim width depending on teh manufacturer.

It's not the width of the tire you are screwing up with, it is the profile of the tire. In the 19's you need to be running a 25 series tire, NOT a 30 series. If you are trying to fit a 30 series tire and have the wrong offset on the wheel then you are going to have serious problems.

Tippy,

without knowing the offset of your wheel no one can really offer you any useful or concrete advice other than opinions.

Ok guys, lets throw the offset out of the picture, it is WRONG and I know that. Cant change unless I mill the wheels or buy new ones.

I am just questioning if anyone has put a 275 or 285 on a 19" X 10.5" rim and what is their opinions of using the unpreferred size.

I am well aware of the recommended sizes:

295 - 10.5
285 - 10
275 - 9.5

Trying to see if I can get by with a little narrower tire.

I wanted to share a picture with you to show you where wheel offset is wrong and the owner had to compensate with going with a narrow tyre to get clearance (sorry it's not a Porsche):

I know not a great shot of the wheels, but if you look at the rear one you can see that the tyre is actually hidden by the wheel. You can look and see on the front that from the bead of the tyre/rim it curves inside aggressively. IMHO it looks stupid, but I think this is an extreme situation unless the owner wanted it this way which I have to ask why

Right now I have a 10" rear and running 275/30's. I can see with my clearance I can get a 285/30 and it works with a 10" wheel still. I don't want to go up to 295 unless I see after going with 285 I can. With 235 on the front on 8.5 the tyre sidewall just barely sticks out beyond the wheel lip, the rear currently, the tyre is just behind the wheel lip. So an extra 5mm will put it at the wheel lip.
