Default Fill my tires with Nitrogen?

A local dealer sent me this e-mail... seems like a bargin.

Dear Robert,

Compressed air can be a tire's worst nightmare. Air is usually oily and wet, a nasty combination that over time destroys tire rubber compounds - not an issue with NitroFil, which contains less that 2% oxygen and is completely moisture free. Tires will stay at a consistent psi and will not be influenced by external forces of heat and cold.

Here are some benefits you may get with using nitrogen:
• Better fuel consumption and more miles to the gallon
• Extended tire life and increased tire mileage - Tires last up to 25% longer
• Smoother ride with better handling, braking and steering
• Fewer breakdowns, blowouts and tire fatigue
• Better stability and decreased rolling resistance

Did you know 90% of tire related accidents are caused by under inflated tires?

Did you know under inflated tires can adversely affect braking, handling and steering?

Operating a vehicle with just 1 tire under inflated can affect gas mileage and reduce that tire's life by 10,000 miles.

Also, according to Michelin and Goodyear, running tires at 20% under inflation can reduce the tire's life by up to 50% and affect fuel consumption by 30%.

The U.S.Department of Energy reports that 4 million gallons of gasoline are lost every day due to low tire pressure. Every day! You’ll burn 10% more fuel if 1 tire is just 5 lbs. low.

So, what are you waiting for? If you own anything with wheels that previously had air in them, it makes great sense to use NitroFil. To learn more about filling your tires with nitrogen, click here.

Hurry in and get the latest advancement in tire inflation! It will provide up to 97% nitrogen in your tires. For a limited time, we will perform this fantastic service for only $69.95 tax*.

I can get my tires inflated for only $70 + tax... wow.

Rob - just use some of that expanding foam they use to insulate houses. After that stuff sets up, there will be no air leaks, no more driving on under inflated tires, no more flats, no more tire repairs! I can will fill 8 tires!

I have a bottle of nitorgen in my garage that we use on the race cars but when I fill the tires in my Cab I use plain old air and I haven't crashed yet!

$70 is insane. You can buy enough nitorgen to fill 100 cars for less than that.

I've watched the local tire shop sell that stuff. The problem is that they don't purge the tire, so you get a tire filled with nitrogen and whatever water was in the tire from the original fill or bead-seating inflation. It's the equivalent of selling bottled water at $4/gallon. Without the cost of plastic bottles.

The letter is pure BS.

Tires were designed and engineered to be filled with air.

Virtually all tire shops have filters on their air lines that remove moisture and oil from their compressed air source.

Heat is a tires worst enemy which will occur if the tire is run at too low of pressure, regardless of what gas it is filled with.

Tires are damaged from exposure to the elements, especially exposure to ultra violet light (sun) and ozone and certain industrial pollutants, not from any kind of dirty air on the inside.

Benefits stated are for nitrogen inflated tires @ correct pressure v. air inflated @ INCORRECT pressure.

Fill them with Helium. Think of the weight savings.

I just use fix a flat every month before I drive it throught the car wash machine..... I just deflate and add fix a flat, deflate and repeat monthly. The Senior Automotive Specialist (I just call him Buck) at the pep boys said this will strengthen my tires from the inside out!

Helium, I like that.

The only thing I agree with in the message from your tire guy is about how many cars have under-inflated tires. I was stuck in traffic this morning and checked out other driver's tires. Well over half the cars I saw had significantly under-inflated tires. Don't these people ever check the tire pressure?

The scary thing is that I wonder how many people bit on the deal. Remember, marketing always gets *some* conversion.

thanks,
Amir

I'm hoping a few of them would be Rennlisters that would read this and stay away from this.

If I can only save one, it would have all been worth it.

$70 each? That doesn't sound too bad. Same price for the summer grade nitrogen as the winter grade? Would they charge extra to dilute the nitrogen with about 21% oxygen and 1% argon? I find that mix works well.
