why is the 993 worth so much more than a 996?

spare me the diatribes about the 993's air cooled pedigree and "last of the air cooled era" blah, blah, blah. i get that. is that all there is too it? i love a purist's car. but there has to be more to it. and no, i wouldn't dump my 996 for a 993 if i could afford one. unless it's a C4S. maybe.

My experience; when I went looking for a newer car I too was drawn by the 993 hype. So I drove a C4S and a Turbo and immediately thought too much like the 930. Then I drove my first 996 C4S and thought instantly that it seemed right. I then drove another and then a standard 996 then a 996 cab. Well I took my DEPOSIT off the 993 and bought the 04 C4S without even telling my wife. I have not looked back and that was in Feb of this year.
I took back everything I said about the 996 that I thought I heard from people that obviously did not know what they were talking about. I found the 996 S car to be superior to the 993.
PLUS it has a really cool cup holder!

bernocco, had the exact same experience. loved my 95 C2 but bills mounting. reluctant to buy a 996. then i drove a C4S. loved it. then drove a 996 C2 and found it light steering and no match for the C4S. been living happily ever after with my 03 C4S.

I think the issue is the market....its the best judge of value...and that can be defined in any number of ways...I do think the later (water cooled, non dry sump) cars are nearly ideal for 95% of the Porsche buying public...however...Just one guys opinion...Jerry

They gave a Nobel prize to an economist a few years ago for proving that value is subjective and that markets are not 'ultimately wise'. 993s are worth more than most 996s because the people who bought them said they are.

This is easy without diatribes but hard with most b/c for some reason there is a great deal of snobbery (not warranted) by the 993 crowd. There is an articficial hype created by those that tout the "air-cooled" angle. They don't want to come to grips with the fact that air cooled is WAY behind the times and water cooled is a huge leap in engine advancement. Second, production numbers. Up until the 996 there was not alot of p-cars made (like the 996). Simple supply and demand. The 996 IS a better car, an evolution of technology, reliability, etc, etc, etc. Do I love the 993? Absolutely. As well, I love just about every single variant of a p-car.
I own 2 996's and absolutely love them both. However, I will buy another one at some point soon. It will probably be a 993 or 964. As me if I will ever get rid of my CAB or GT3. NOT A CHANCE!

Most people seem to forget that the aircooled engines was invented by Prof. Ferdinand at the VW times, because the majority of Germans didn't have money to keep they'r car in a garage; so the water radiators would freeze in winter time damaging the engines.
