I hate lazy for sale ads and always try to be straight forward and honest.

of course my last cars haven't been such awful piles of crap that a 60k mile engine needed to be disassembled prior to purchase

This. While a proactive bore scope top and bottom would surely make anyone more comfortable, but so might $1000 or $2000 off the asking price. Generally, when trying to offload a vehicle that you really wish you hadn’t purchased, it’s best to sell as-is without spending too much time and effort improving things, unless you have a passion and love for those things. But OP doesn’t, so, don’t.

That cup of 996 cup of koolaide hate is draining slowly enough. I think a lot went to the 991 GT3 engine Porsche had to warranty for 10 years. I suspect Lots of owners out there redlining upon startup just to blow theirs up as we speak.

there is no amount of passion in the world to account for a 35k dollar engine rebuild in a 35k dollar car lol

Detail your 996 inside and out.
Take or have someone take some quality detailed photos.
List the car with an honest description including all maintenance and faults.
Done

If a buyer wants a PPI they can pay for it.

I try to be very thorough when listing a car but I think I would leave the PPI up to a potential buyer. I think getting it cleaned up and any maintenance it needs I would most likely take care of it. Outside of that I am happy to help with the PPI if a potential buyer is going to be paying for it.

Well, there are some who want the performance of a 996tt, and like the 996 platform, but want a lighter car or one that handles a little better. The 996tt is easily now $55-$70k and will likely be $100k in 5 years.

Same thing can be said for a used Aston. Buddy of mine has a 2008 and he was running thru the costs and I was very happy I owned a 996. His old man owned a Testarossa, same thing but even more expensive. The 996 is cheap from a servicing standpoint versus the vast majority of performance sports cars.

it's not the cost to buy the car, it's the cost to keep it serviced and running. This is why we have so many under serviced examples of 996s. After the warranty ended, so did the service.

Why do you feel this is ultimately inevitable? There are plenty of 100k+ and even 200k/300k+ mile 996's on the road on original engines.

You are talking to a guy with the 996 passion. I plan on doing it when the time comes. Maybe it's because I have had the car for 20 years and have had more fun with it on and off the track than any middle aged man should have with his clothes on.

Or maybe it's because I understand what it can actually do on the track with only 320 Hp.

Unfortunately, many new owners haven't had the chance to experience this. You develop an extreme appreciation for the car and it's capabilities.

When instructing students at PCA events, I usually wait until the 3rd session to strap them into my car and take them out with the big boys. Their reaction is priceless. There is not one who doesn't say...

I had no idea the 996 could do this. What an incredible car.

Then I say...

Yep, it's a 996 and an incredible car.

I love the car, and don't really plan to sell it. Its actually my daily driver and I just put snow tires on it. but there are too many good cars out there to get tied down with a single platform, I'm just trying to prepare for the inevitable.

Answer to your question @work_truck - someone actually posted the question on the Off Topic members forum "What if I started a website like Cars n Bids but I had PPI's on every car" and the response was resoundingly "I wouldn't trust it I would want to hire my own." And I echo the sentiment, not worth your money. Spend it on the detail!

Personally I wouldn't trust a seller's PPI either, but I wanted this forum's input.

also never know a seller's PPI consists of and might have to end up having a second one anyway.

I've had similar discussions with friends but my idea is more of a crowdsourced app that let you find qualified people to PPI/test drive cars for you out of state/area

so if you want to buy a car 1800 miles away, you can hop on the app and find Jim who has successfully driven 65 transactions and specializes in european cars to go check something out for you for $50 or something
