3.6l for a 2001 C2?
Having put 137k miles on a 1999 C2, I had no fear buying what looked and sounded like a clean 2001 C2 with 79k on the odometer.
10k later she’s developed piston slap. Still runs strong but I know it’s a ticking time bomb and I’m a crazy road trip guy.
So, I’m about to go
shopping for a rebuilt engine or a low mileage used one and I’m wondering if using a 3.6l engine from a 2002 or later 996 is a plug and play operation or are there extensive mods to get the Mark2 engine into the Mark 1 car...
any advice is appreciated.

3.6L is not plug-and-play in 996.1s. You can swap a 3.6L into a 996.1 if you swap harnesses and some other things.
A Boxster 3.2L swaps into a 996.1 pretty easily. Just gives you another option. It's not much less powerful than the 3.4L either. Maybe 20-25 hp difference.

No, that should not complicate things.
There is a user on this forum who rebuilt an M96 properly. BYProdriver, or something like that, is selling it. It was originally a 3.2L Boxster engine. Now it's a 3.6L.
If you want to do it right, I would go that route. Any M96 that hasn't been properly rebuilt is a ticking time bomb. His has the Nikies sleeves.

I’ve continued my deep googling and have to say I agree with your conclusion on having the engine rebuilt with the new sleeves, pistons, etc...
Thank you for your feedback and insights. Hope you are hunkered down and well.
