Yaz's Rebuild
#271
Started off with a final check of fluids and tire pressure, torqued lug nuts, and reset the DME. Battery wasn't up for the whole starting procedure (picking up a new AGM one tomorrow) so I procured the help of jumper cables and my 4Runner. Then went thru the starting procedure described by LN (and probably a few other threads on the forum). I was able to build up the oil pressure and get the engine started!!!
Then my girlfriend pointed out a leak. Quickly realized I had a pretty significant power steering fluid leak from one of the hose couplings. So I'll be sorting that out (and doing some extensive cleanup) over the next couple days. Tonight's research as me thinking I'm missing an o-ring or it just wasn't completely seated. Should have given those high pressure fittings more attention.

Power steering coupler was a quick fix. Cleaned things up. Dropped in the new AGM battery (used RMN25 for 25% off at Advanced Auto). Car fired right up again. Jumped back into the initial start up procedure described by LN. No leaks. Even had time for a drive before tonight's storm rolled in...
HOLY ****!!! This engine is a beast. My heart is still racing from the first drive. Can't stop laughing to myself (probably sounds more like the giggling of a school girl). Hands are shaking a bit.
I realize this is some mix of the raw power of the engine, having not driven a Porsche in over a year, and the sense of accomplishment of my first engine build. I'm not able to differentiate what is what, but for now I really don't care.

Welp. Got a problem...
Car felt like it was running great with with solid fuel trims. Noticed yesterday the cam deviations seemed off. First time I checked they were around -4° and --7.5° on banks 1 and 2 respectively. Creeped further to about -5° and -8.5° this morning. Should have investigated more before driving this morning...
Started running rough on the highway and threw a CEL. Codes P0300, P0301, and P0304. So misfires on cylinders 1 and 4.
Any thoughts? Crank position sensor (it was replaced during the rebuild)?

Did you properly torque the bolts on the cam drive sprockets? What were your deviations when the engine was running smoothly? It sounds like those sprockets May have slipped (I don’t remember what the torque on those bolts are off hand, but I know they’re not very high... 16-18 ft lbs ? Maybe 20?...). The plus side is, I’m pretty sure you can do these with the engine in... bank 1 more difficult than bank 2, since they’re behind the oil pumps... Good luck

A thumbs up comes out as a question mark lol unintended , genuinely well done, it takes some guts to take on a full rebuild, lots of research time and money, and the nagging thought in the back of your mind, at the turn of a key if I've messed just one thing up it could all go up in smoke, I could hardly bring myself to turn my key when I was on my first start , well done , think I'm going big cylinders next once I've filled the piggy bank !

12.9 fastener used, not the 10.9? Did you happen to use loctite on the fasteners?
#284
Guessing the cam sprockets are a good place to start regardless.
#285
The reason I asked about the loctite is we've seen the bolts actually come loose if loctite is used.
