Default 02 sensor replacement and computer remapping for more fuel flow

Has anyone tried switching out the 02 sensors and remapping the computer to get more gas flow. I spoke to my mechanic and he said this would add a lot more hp and he would not need to changeout the fuel rails or injectors. Has anyone tried this mod as I have a 2002 with a cold air intake and fabspeed exhaust. The cost is about $800 for what he claims is a 20%+ hp gain.

snake oil sales and bore scoring problems...and you do not have a cold air intake unless you have the stock air filter box with snorkle

Here is what I'm talking about: you take a highly engineered Porsche flat six that develops close to 300HP as is and then spend $$$ trying to squeeze 20% more HP by flooding the cylinders with additional fuel? That additional fuel above and beyond what Porsche engineers (air/fuel ratio) came up with will probably wash all the lubricating oil off your cylinder walls and you will score your cylinder walls very quickly. Like others have said, you gain much more by learning how to drive your car more quickly at PCA events.

I don't have a tune, but Softronic advertises in the PCA Panorama magazine and I've talked with the owner (Scott?) and he is very knowledgable.

I think I'd find a different mechanic who knows Porsches.

I would not buy a tune unless I knew exactly what changes the tune makes to the Factory program,ie, does it increase the timing 3 degrees (19* to 21* at WOT?) or AFR ( 12.5 afr to 12.0 afr?). Most "tuners" will hide behind the right to keep the "intellectual proprietary knowledge" a secret as a reason not to tell you what changes they make, but for me it is a reason NOT to buy their product/products.Plus you don't know what you are buying and if it will deliver as promised untill AFTER you have spent your money...You are just paying for their reputation and promises, and the faith in them will determine how much you will pay for said promise/reputation.

i had considered a tune to get more Hp, but decided instead to get a top rated radar detector/laser diffuser and drive my c4s as if it had more Hp. very happy with my decision to date.

I do have an after market K&N cold air intake. The previous owner took out the old air box and yes, I know there are a lot of comments on switching these out. It came that way when I bought it. I am wondering if anyone has tried this as the mechanic said he has done this a lot. I just want to talk to someone who has done it. I imagine there will be increased wear on the cylinders, but adding a turbo or supercharger would also increase the wear.

Then have your wizard mechanic refer you to some of his past customers to find out...

The Porsche OEM airbox and snorkel are designed to draw air from outside the engine compartment , thus the “cold air” label. The K&N system eliminates the snorkel and draw air from the engine compartment which is definitely not cold air!
