Replaced the alternator (rebuilt Bosch), new "y" cable, and fixed an air leak that was causing a check engine code for "too lean". Of course all this didn't happen here, but two hours away in Phoenix where the alternator bit the dust and caused the battery to drain flat. So one rental car and two round trips (5 hrs each time) later and I drove the 996 home today. Fortunately my car failed when I stopped by Evolution Motorsports so they were able to do the work there. A long week....But I did get to see some sweet tuned Porsche and other exotics while hanging around.
Had horrible experiences with the OEM vent-mounted product and saw plenty of other designs that were either expensive, interfered with dash functions, or both. Finally found this one, and was blown away but not only the functionality but also the quality. Price is $25. https://www.ultimatecupholders.com/
I'm not understanding the love that these cup holders are getting. It's not very secure, I think it looks fugly in my car, and it doesn't put the cup in a convenient location. It definitely doesn't look like it belongs. I may have to rig something so that it's in a better place and easily removable. I much prefer my other cup holder from Sound in Motion. The only downside to that one is that it only works for cups, not cans or bottles.
Hey Bill all I can say is you must not have it in there correctly. Mine is very tight and does not move. My cup (on the passenger side) is very accessible and not in the way at all. I use a stainless travel mug and can toss the car around with no spill or movement. I LIKE having it on the floor area also so it does not get in the way of anything. The sound in motion looks like a decent one but that is where my phone holder is so it would get in the way. Still like mine the best
Changed the oil and filter. Cut filter open. A little small sparkle. No major debris or larger concerns. Will do again in 4K miles. 52k now, again at 56 and again at 60.
Reading my 996 The Essential Companion and very intrigued by my car. 2/98 Production with an X 1999 VIN number. Almost unheard of?!? Lots to read and research. May write/call into Porsche for BC and try to find the story. Title says 1999, VIN says 1999
but production date says 1998. At least a Dual
row IMS. I see headers (?) and possible aftermarket exhaust. It has an intake upgrade and all clear lenses, so it received some love in the past. I have a few more items to do. But will drive it tomorrow, as it is my current daily.

The Sound in motion one looks like it would snap if you put a Yeti full of coffee in it, too.
