Then you're not pushing hard enough!
But in all seriousness, many times a stock sized slick tire will provide superior grip levels to something wider, its all about what you want to do and spend on. I'm in the wide street tire camp.. 315/30 rear
My four spoke wheel is super tired looking and has the dead horn bushings, so I grabbed a 3 spoke off ebay and ordered the mecedes paddles. It is not keeping with my "stock 99" dream, but I had the 3 spoke in my 986S and loved it.
After installing the three spoke, I realized the tip buttons are much larger. The merc paddles should be here soon, but I'm not 100% I'll need them with the newer 3 spoke layout. ANyone else make the tip 4 to 3 spoke switch and notice a meaningful difference in thumb button use?
You are totally missing the massive weight reduction from losing a spoke!

I had the 4-spoke on my first 996 and the 3-spoke on my second one. I always hated the look of the 4-spoke wheel. I thought it would look a million times better if it had a colored crest just to break up the "sea of beige" in the middle. I also felt like the 4-spoke blocked the gauges -- not that it actually did block them, it just looked really bulky to me. Back then, I didn't even know the 3-spoke was an option. My current 996 has the 3-spoke and I like it much, much better. It looks better and I think it feels better with one less spoke (too long ago for me to remember the details on how each wheel felt). Some prefer the 4-spoke though, so it all comes down to personal preferences.
