Magnetic Oil Plug Washer Blunder
Smart move, changed the oil today. I removed the Magnetic plug I had installed last time and carefully tried to observe whether there was a sealing washer on it. I concluded there wasn't (couldn't remember), finished draining the oil, reinstalled plug being careful not to over tighten, changed filter and refilled with oil. While dumping the oil, guess what I saw in the pan, the fricken washer! Anyone else ever done this? Do I need it if the plug sealed well and not leaks?

If it is plugged well and not leaking, just keep an eye on it until your next oil change. I think the last time I ordered something from Auto Atlanta or Pelican, I also ordered about 15 of those sealing washers. Replace them every oil change.
Remember to check it with the engine up to temp...as it warms up things expand and it might start leaking. If you are quick about it, center the drain pan, pull the plug, place washer and put it back in. Bet you don't lose but just a little bit of oil. Less than a quart.

I believe they have aluminum sealing washers. I was just going through some parts in my attic the other day and found about 6 of them, I remembered I bought them when I got the kit, or when I was at LN for a Porsche event. I have yet to change it out, but now I know that I have them, I just might if I don't forget where they are next time I do an oil change.

"Prepare for the "virgin metal" crush ring argument, beginning in 3...2...1..."
I've been using the same crush washer for the last three oil changes... No drips yet...

If you are really paranoid, just drain it into a clean bucket with a filter, add the washer, reuse the oil. If you don't have one of these they are great for reusing oil or coolant.

Yeah - I've done that one a time or 3. I've handled it 2 ways - left it for the next oil change. Used my finger to plug the drain while I reinstalled a washer. EZPZ.
If it leaks - fix it. If not - let it be.

Or, just chalk it up as a lesson learned and use this opportunity to "Oil Cleanse" the car. Drive it about 500 miles and drain. Remember to put the washer on the plug after draining this time. :-) Change oil and filter then move on with life.

Just don't use a copper crush washer.

Beats the time that I forgot to put the plug back in. Filled 7 quarts before I noticed the oil seeping across the floor from beneath the vehicle. What a mess.

If you are reasonably dexterous, you can remove the plug, stick your finger in the hole, add a crush ring to your oil plug, and reassemble without leaking an appreciable amount of oil. This is best done when the car is cold; otherwise, scalding oil running down your arm is a real possibility...
