As per the other thread here's a photo of a genuine Porsche filter with a check valve that's fallen apart. Not sure if it was defective or overtightened at installation but it allowed almost a quart of oil to siphon into the left turbo over 24 hours. A 2nd genuine Porsche filter hand tightened (given where it is it's hard to get even half a turn past the gasket contact point) and 15/50 oil and the problems gone away.
You can see the disc that forms part of the check valve sitting on the filter; it fell out when I went to drain the filter. You can also see the spring lying sideways inside the filter; it should be concentric with the filter.

Thanks for the detailed info and pic!
I'm getting ready to change the oil on mine... how touchy is this thing? It is tough to get a hand up there so is it likely someone tightened this with a cap-style filter wrench?

I had no trouble tightening it by hand but the grip angle (only from underneath) means it's hard to get too much torque without a wrench. I had to use a wrench to get it off but that doesn't necessarily mean anything; filters seem to get tighter with time.

I just changed the oil on my NA 993 yesterday and my hand would not fit up there... maybe the TT is plumbed a bit different?
I guess I will find out soon.
You should always need a wrench to oil filters off. Unless you have Popeye forearms

Ah Ha.... That looks like an over tighened filter... The easyer way to get to filter is to remove the oil drain tube below the filter but you must block it up with somthing or the whole tank will empty.At that point its a bit easyer to get at the filter.I have tried 4,000 different oil filter wrenches and NONE of them fit. I use a thin piece of rubber to grip the filter and KILL it by hand..So far So good.

As I was changing the oil as well to a heavier grade I disconnected that line as part of the drain process. There's some decent photos on the p-car diy.

I am in the "don't remove that hard oil line unless absolutely necessary camp". O-ring, pita bolt to get lined up, etc. Just another chance for an oil leak.
If the TT is set up the exact same as the NA cars I will work around the oil line... it's not too hard.
I am just trying to figure out how you can overtighten that little filter by hand! Even with the line removed... makes me think it is "touchier" than the NA 993. If not then I am good to go.
Since I am new to 993tt ownership all of this talk about oil draining into the turbos has my attention.

Listen to me when I tell you folks that "my mitts" can damage the flimsy US made Porsche filter... I have done it!! Caution must be used.

I just did my NA993 and it took 10 quarts without removing that line.
And thanks Kevin. It doesn't take much to snug up a filter so it won't leak. I'll go with the less is more approach
