Default GIAC Chip to 480hp ??

my TT is in the shop and i asked my mechanic about removing my turbos and doing upgrades.
He suggested i might be fine with just a GIAC chip, front oil cooler (ive ordered from group buy), and better flowing exhaust and that could get me to approx 480hp and 500lb torque. No change to turbos or intercooler.

Anyone have this chip? how is it? im looking for lots of torque and a wider torque band while still being drivable (this is the only car i own)

i knew you can chip to 430 or 450, but is 480 a bit extreme without other work?
any help here.. im not dealing with unlimited funds, so maybe this is a good first step.
thanks everyone.

Rob,

You may want to contact one of the GIAC dealers direct. I have their chip but it is not inexpensive and it is mated to K24's. They may offer a chip to go with your k16's, I'm not sure.?? They talk about 45-60hp/tq gains herehttp://www.giacusa.com/giac_porsche.php

While there seems to be much debate on this subject, consensus is that stock k-16s simply can't flow enough air to get to the 480HP that is being promised. I'd be very surprised if any chip alone can get you over 430-440 hp. I have the Gemballa ECU in my 96TT, and it seems to deliver boost sooner and feels more responsive. But my butt-o-meter can't really feel any significant performance changes. Someday, I'll do the hybrids.

I think the factory Porsche 450 hp option consisted of K24s and a new ecu. I would find it hard to beleive that a chip only will give you 30 more horsepower than that setup. Of course, I have a vested interest in the Hybrids producing more power....

I had the Porsche 450 kit added and it is k24s, new ecu, additional oil cooler mounted up front and new exhaust tips like on the turbo S...you could get more by chipping further and adding cat bypass pipes...but I think I will leave it as is...

No way... Even if you cranked the boost to 1.2 bars on the K16's you'll kill them.. At this level they are spent.. They have ran out of air a long time ago and are running in an overspeed condition... You only have 3 choices GT1's, Stage 2's or K24's... As you know all will require tuning..

I believe that paul (old guy) has this chip (listed in his selling ad for his TT).
Anyone drive his TT or dyno it? .. paul?? ViperBob?

Hi Rob:

We've done a good number of these over the past 8 years,...

450 HP or more, requires different turbos just as Kevin said. You can use his hybrids (recommended) or one of the various K-24's depending on what you wish to do with your car.

The various GIAC ECU programming options are matched to the turbochargers and grades of fuel being used.

Key point: As long as you have firm control over oil temperatures and charge-air temperatures, 480 HP does not compromise engine durability or longevity. Its all a question of degree (pun intended),.....

The quoted HP (480) may be on race gas. Those of you who have tried it know there can be substantial improvement over pump gas.

FWIW,...the 480 HP programming was done with 92 octane fuel.

Under hot conditions, 91 is insufficient to maintain optimal power output and a mix of 91 octane and 100 octane fuel is recommended to prevent knock sensor activity from pulling boost and advance back and a resultant loss of performance.

Whether its a stock TT or a modified one, these air-cooled turbocharged engines perform best with 95 or better (R+M/2) octane unleaded fuels,.......

steve,
so, based on your first post above, how does the chip get to 480hp without modified turbos (assuming 92 octane fuel)?

Just done the 480hp mod, loving it!! Tks Steve!

Quick question: how do I monitor charged air temp? a bit worried as it gets quite hot here during the summer...

CS, the inlet air temp sensor located on the intecooler sends readings to the ECU.. If it is running to hot timing and boost is pulled..... However, if you have a hot spell 90-100 degrees... Spash some high octane 100 in the tank..

Rob:

You cannot use the 480 HP upgrade unless you use either Kevin's hybrid turbos or K-24's. The stock K-16's won't do it. The 480 HP programming is based on those higher capacity turbochargers.

Craig:

In your climate, I'd opt for a larger IC to maintain peak performance in hot weather. As Kevin said, the ECU will back pull boost & timing when the intake air temps (and cylinder head temps) get too high. Use 98 RON fuel.

I can also get you a digital charge-air temp guage so you can monitor intake temps both before and after the IC.

I'll be sending my turbos to Kevin in the next couple of days for his stage 1 hybrid upgrade. If I move to Oregon or Washington, can I get any better than this crappy 91 octane Cali gas without looking for race fuel? I think Wash gas is 92.

By the way, I had a great conversation with Kevin today. I learned more about my car in 30 minutes with him than I have in 5 years. This guy is the real deal and more than lives up to his stellar reputation. I think I just scratched the surface of his knowledge with my limited pea brain mechanical background. I'm sure our turbos are in good hands with Kevin.

Now, what am I going to do without my car for the next 3 weeks? Driving the Volvo turbo wagon just isn't the same (though I can take it to Costco).
