Default Options on changing k16's?

I am officially addicted to modding my car!

I know this has been covered but I have to ask. (Kevin and Steve please
chime in as well!)

If I were to replace my k16's what would be a good choice? And can I just do that without doing anything to my ecu? I have had 3 units in my car and I would feel better just leaving that alone for now.

Would there be an all around Turbo that would improve street and highway performance? Not that I am unhappy but I'm bitten!!!

So, S ecu, have the oil cooler, will a turbo change help?

Your car is so awesome, a rare and beautiful "S", and its finally running right. I dunno... I'm anxious to upgrade my turbos to k16 hybrids, but for you... I think you should just enjoy it the way it is.

The voice of reason!!! Spoken like a true rational person. Wife all over you huh? lol

Just kidding! I just wonder what kind of difference it would make. Bolt on mod that can always be put back to stock.

Nobody else seems to have an opinion either!! Thanks for the compliment as well Steve.

Hmmm, depends upon your driving preferences in terms of what you value the most, how you use the car, and what sensations thrill you the most. I love turbo power and torque, but I detest lag. I'm always afraid of introducing lag on a street car, no matter how high the gain on the top end. I added K27s to my 951 and the top end thrust was unmatched, but coming out of a slow second gear corner I would curse that K27 every time. I'd like to hear more detailed thoughts from Q or others with K24s, I think I recall Q in a very recent post indicating that that he was less than thrilled with lag introduced by K24s, although the top end of K24s is dynamite I'm told. Of course, those who track their cars regularly and consistently maintain rpms north of 4000 love the benefits of k24s and worry very little about more lag.

I find K16 hybrids (GT1's?) very interesting, and will probably go that route when/if it's time to change. Rick has a nice short write-up of the relative characteristics of the K16, hybrids, and 24s on www.993tt.com.

Curious to hear what the experts say ...

For a safe bet go with the GT1's. Do the wastegate mods, and if you want to spend some more cash ceramic coat the turbine housing. GT1's will wake the car up. You will have the top end of a K24 and virtually no lag with the wastegate/port mods. Anything more in terms of larger turbochargers you will have to go to ECU programming...

Kevin,

Wastegate mods? This is the first time I've heard that mentioned. What is this about?

Maybe porting the wastegate? On some cars, people do this to keep boost creep in check, but not sure if that is a problem with p-cars.

Wastegate mods are Kevin's proprietary design and work wonders on the K16/24 turbos he is doing.

I read where Performance Techniques puts thermal coating on turbochargers to "keep the heat inside the turbocharger for better response." Is there any value to this. The same article talks about putting the same coating on exhaust manifolds for a "greater reduction in under-hood temperatures" which sounds of value to our cars if it works. Any thoughts on these coatings?

Keith,

You can find more details about the benefits of ceramic coating in this link.. No affiliation whatsoever, I just contacted them for a quotation on most engine parts for a project I am working on..
http://www.hpcoatings.com/motorsports.htm

BTW, my K24 S from Gemballa are coated inside the housing, I don't know if they are standard like that or if the previous owner had requested them.

Here is a picture that shows a set of Zero Clearance Billet compressor wheel hybrids. These units are ceramic coated...

Steve;

It is well known that the K16 turbine housings are alot smaller in size and A/R from it larger brother the K24. When one starts requesting larger boost pressures and more HP, one must deal with wastegate to prevent boost creep. However, one strong benifit is while being able to meet the boost target that the ECU has set, the ECU will be able to open the gates later vs sooner. This allow the turbine wheels to spin up faster and to minimize RPM loss while the gates are open, due to the shorter duration. These turbo's actually have larger wastegates installed in them made from CNC'd billet. The ceramic coating keeps the heat inside the turbine housing maximizing the energy to the turbine wheel, and helps dramatically reducing radiant heat.. These turbo's have basically no lag..

Default I want one!

Kevin, Impressive!

I know your preference is for K16s as a base for building your hybrids, but in higher hp applications (550-600) and with all this technology..zero clearance, ceramic coating, titanium wheels and wastegate mods, wouldn't the same be applicable to a modified K24 (non hybrid), since it will reduce considerably the lag, their achille's heel, while benefiting from their greater flow at high revs? Would these K16 hybrids keep their efficiency at 550-600 hp?

Not sure what I am saying makes sense

Thanks

Kevin,

What kind of money are the GT1 hybrids with ceramic coating? Sounds like the way to go. And once again these will make a noticable difference with the current ECU as is?
