Current Values of the 993TT worth it? Please discuss ...
Ok, congratulate me on my first stupid rennlist post in 7 years, I made it pretty far.
much to my amazement, somehow I’m finally fortunate enough to be able to actually afford a 993TT.
my problem is, with the current prices hovering somewhere north of $150K for one, I’m worried I might actually be disappointed given what those dollars can actually buy today.
so, here I am, dumb enough to ask for a biased opinion from the forum which is dedicated to these lovely vehicles, hoping I can get someone to talk me off the ledge.
given today’s current prices, is the 993tt really worth the price tag or did I miss the boat? If I happened to have been in a position to afford one of these 10 years ago, this post would never have been created....
please discuss.

I think you will find a nice copy for $150-160k. Just be patient. Took me a long time before I found the right copy. It's definitely worth the money. I would do it again.

definitely a legit question, for the 150k you can buy a nice 17-18 991.2TTS, spending that on a 993TT you really got to love it, like we do, i got lucky i bought mine in 2005, but if i had to spend the money today i would probably pass and get something else which i did a bought a low mileage 997.2TTS but kept the 993TT

It sounds like you've been wanting one for many years and if you're able to make it happen, do it! I don't think you've missed the boat at all. Financially, you won't double your money on it but I don't think you'll lose your shirt either. In terms of the driving enjoyment you'll get out of it, I've got probably 25,000 miles behind the wheel and have a smile each time I put it back in the garage.

Drive one. Drive a 997 and a 991 variant. Drive a new 992. Then decide.

993TT and air cooled prices have softened a bit but not back to where it was 10 years ago or even close to it.
Be prepared to throw more money to it even after buying it. Do you want a driver or queen? The best value is a 997.1 turbo today. Price of nostalgia(3TT) is how deep your pocket is.

Honesty if I had to buy today I'd just pick up a 993NB. They are priced the best in terms of value, still not like 10 years ago but we not talking $150K too.
Really depends what your looking for as well. Do you need the WB or additional HP?? Cause from pure driving enjoyment point of view, a 911 rwd is ideal.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the feedback and honest discussion.
I have wanted one forever, and when I say that money goes along way, I am referring to using that cash for a more modern Porsche. My problem is I’m an old school aircooled guy through and through, and though the newer stuff is much “better” in a lot of ways, it’s not for me.
that said, I do plan on getting a driver, modding it a bit and enjoying the hell out of it without worrying too much about it it down the road.
the NB variants don’t do it for me, and I’m afraid anything other than the turbo of that generation is just going to be too slow for my liking, though I hear the comments regarding RWD vs AWD being more enjoyable.
Looks like I’ve got some decisions to make, feel free to keep the comments coming as I think the discussion is good. If anyone has a lead on a decent driver coming up for sale, feel free to connect with me.

First off - congrats on getting yourself into the position to fulfill a dream....
You won't be disappointed.
Did you miss the boat? Yes. Most of the guys who posted above and I were fortunate enough to buy ours when they were an absolute bargain - we also all still have them even though values have probably doubled for many of us. That just goes to show you how special the 993tt is - every drive is an event and the speed they produce is still relevant 25 years on.
I don't agree with the comment above regarding having to throw money at them - mine has been incredibly reliable and has needed very little other than preventative maintenance.
Even though you are going to be looking for a driver, I'd recommend buying the best one you can afford & perform the modifications once you have had time to replenish the bank account and get to know the car.
Good luck!

Race Car
Drive a bunch for sure but I found the newer the car, the more numb the ride. I feel they've engineered the sole right out of them. I also find the post 997's to be waaay too big for a slimmish 177 pounder like me. A 993tt parked beside a modern 911, or even Boxster, looks positively tiny, as a sports car should be. A friend of mine with a triumph GT6 even calls my '74 260Z and SUV! But each to their own. Enjoy the shopping.

gotta drive it to see. I'm not sure I would have bought one $100k plus, but I also am not sure what I could buy to replace it. It does have that classic feel with modern performance, which is pretty rare. Looks wise and sound wise, a Ferrari 355 really calls my name, but the maintenance beefs are too numerous for me to go there.
At $150k, id take a long look at a good 997.2 GT3 or potential F430 with a stick (maybe a few bucks more)

like you, i considered the opportunity cost 22 years ago when i bought my 97 turbo.
they essentially were all presold...crazy internet days... everything going for above msrp; even used cars.
picked one up in 7/98 that was bought new in 7/97 for $125k with 3k miles
22 years and 420k miles later... don't really think so much about (lost) opportunity cost
just the miles of smiles and memories. you won't be disappointed. 👊🏻

I have had many 911s over the years . At the moment I'm fortunate enough to own 5 . I must say my 97 993 TT is my favorite. Not the fastest ,not the best handling' , not all the modern gizmos, But still something special as the ultimate Porsche air cooled development.
