Ok - this thread inspired me to take mine out today. 15 miles into the drive Mick came on the radio singing he "Can't get no satisfaction". I had to smile because I'm satisfied . . . .

There are cars far below $150k, I considered 2-3 of them near $100k early this year. Yeah, they were all near 100k miles, maybe had stories (but not salvage), needed some TLC. One of those would have been fine for me. I wanted a car to drive, not a garage queen to look at and rub with a diaper.

You know what I ended up buying? a 2005 Ford GT....did I pay the $300k for a 3k mile car that other guys are paying? No, I paid $182k for a 28k mile car that had a minor story or two and needed some TLC.

In stock form I was wildly disappointed with with my factory 993tt. It came with ROW suspension (springs, shocks and sways) upgrades, K24 GT2 turbos and Andial IC. I felt my outgoing B5 S4 with 400whp was a MUCH more enjoyable car to drive. I stuck with it and eventually tweaked the car to my liking. Remember it's an old car that will likely need all the suspension bushings and other rubber stuff (shifter etc) that dies with age. The shock technology has come a long way too. The PSS9/10 coilovers really do a world of good for ride comfort and handling. The stock k16 turbos are really antiquated compared to what's available today. With a more modern turbo you get far better boost response and better top end. It's a rare have your cake and eat it too thing. The one problem with all those changes is how it effects value. The collectors value originality, It's inverse to what's needed to make the car enjoyable IMHO.

Try and figure out what's important to you. If it's a dream of a 993tt then adjust your performance expectations to the era in which it was created. Many of today's economy cars will out perform the 993tt in stock form. Doesn't mean that's what you want to drive though. You could also source a modified one with higher miles and end up with a much more enjoyable car to drive at a much lower price point.

Name one economy car that will outperform a 993tt's 0 to 60 in 3.7 seconds. Add PSS10 suspension and you've got one of the most fun to drive best looking Porsches ever built.......

Ya it's bragging rights only until you're rolling. Apparently Porsche burned through a bunch of clutches on several cars for Walter Rohrl to do 3.6.

FWIW, I bought a 1997 993TT in 1999. It was amazing! I drove the car about 24k miles and sold it in 2003 because I needed garage space for my teenage kids' hoopty. Since then I have owned a new 2015 991.1 Turbo S and a 2008 997 GT2. I still have the GT2, but I couldn't wait to sell the modern 991 Turbo S after about 24k miles. The 991 Turbo S was so good it was actually boring, so I replaced it with a McLaren 720S. Of all of the cars I have owned, that 993 TT remains my GOAT. The sound of the door closing, the cozy cockpit, the rumble of the engine, nimbleness, and still-competitive performance makes it a special car. I never should have sold that car, and now I find myself looking for another 993 TT. My dream find would have the aluminum gauge faces, aluminum shifter and handbrake, metal door sills, Nokia digital sound, hardback sport seats, and a CD player because I'm 55 years old!

Good luck on your journey and may it include a 993!

I've gone through my fair share of cars and Porsches. The 993tt is the only car I regret selling over the years. I doubled my money on mine a few years back only to pay more now for one recently. The 993tt is just a really cool and special car. In a way I look at it as the king of the air cooled cars minus the RS's ,GT2. I paid big money for mine recently, but I feel that I'd get alot of enjoyment out of it and most likely won't lose my shirt after I'm done with it. I plan to keep it until I decide I'm done with cars, and I mean it. I miss the smaller older cars vs the big new ones, the sound of how the door opens and closes, the sound of startup, lastly the car to me still feels fast and modern enough. I don't think you will be dissapointed in owning one since you've had always wanted one, but at 150k and if money is important a 993 c4s is a good alternative. The car has enough torque to make it feel fast and you can always get a turbo spoiler for it. I can see how a more modern 911 can look very appealing. It really makes alot more sense. I'm sure alot of the 993tt owners here can tell you how magical and special the car is, but you really need to experience it yourself to truly appreciate how special this car really is. Good luck in your decision!

It's so subjective. I also have a very high opinion of the normally aspirated 993s; I had one for 3 years and would usually drive it vs the tt all things equal. But certainly understand the milestone appeal of the turbo. And I have low interest in almost anything made since that period, by Porsche or anyone else!
The only thing I'd add is these are now older cars which were complex when new and, knowledge for proper care and maintenance is receding. So I'd be very selective when searching for the correct car. In my experience if a condition 2 car (whatever that is !) costs $175K, a condition #3 or #4 car cannot be bought cheap enough to bridge the difference in necessary work.

I sold the same 993 turbo twice. I should have kept it as it is the GOAT for me and the prices I paid were a hell of a bargain compared to now. I keep looking and will probably bite the bullet and get back into one.

I bought a 993 Turbo S in 1997 directly from the Porsche importer for whom I was doing work. I optioned it with the 90 litre fuel tank.
I kept it 20 years, drove well over 100,000 kilometers and sold it, replacing it with a 991.2 Turbo S.
Next week I am taking delivery of my new 992 Turbo S.

The 993 Turbo S was an extraordinary car when it came out; today, it is nothing else tan a "classic", a "youngtimer" and a car that collectors love (I think less than 200 were produced).
Despite any "emotional attachment" you may have to it, it is now an "old car", just like the 959 or the Carrera GT.

You buy one if you want it to be part of a collection; but you will not drive it very often, once you have experienced driving the more recent variants.
