Question Yokahama AVS Sport tires?

Has anyone run these tires? If so did they work reasonably well in the rain. I know there are others that are probably better but I may be able to get a nearly new set from someone I know.

I'm really only looking for responses relative to this tire.

I am using AVS Sports on my 96 Targa. I am in Vancouver which usually gets lots of rain (not this year though). They were quite good when new and are now getting a little more slipperly since the backs are amost gone. I would rate them as good to pretty good but not excellent. The wear rating seems to be about average, I have about 9000 miles and two DE events on the tires and the fronts are 60%, backs 20%. The DE events really chew up the tires. If I was to buy a whole new set of tires I might look at other brands...either a cheaper ones that I can just wear through or something like the Michelins, etc.

If you decide not to buy them then send me a PM, I might be interested since my backs are shot (did I say that already?) ;-)

This year I've put on a set of Yokohama AVS ES100 17 inches on my 993 Targa. It performs as good as the stock Continental on the dry, and slightly better in the rain (given the few times that it rained this year in Vancouver). The price is most attractive at US $600 for the whole set including mounting and balancing.

Hey Mike, nice wing you got on your Targa. Maybe I'll see it in person some day.

Ron. I used these on my BMW M3 Evo (3.2) as replacements for the Michelin Pilot Sports. I found them to be absolutely excellent, but they didn't stay that way forever - I found they needed replacing with about 3-4 mm of tread left. I still replaced them with a fresh set of AVS sports.

Great tread pattern too!

I have a new pair of AVS Sports in 295x30x18 on the rear of my turbo with 225x40x18 S03s on the front. I find the AVS Sports to be an excellent dry traction tire, but I have no rain experience. I also have the ES100s on the front of my Cobra, and find them to be pretty good, and an excellent value. Neither of these is up to the AVS Intermediates that are discontinued, but were an amazing dry traction tire. Too bad they're gone.

I'm on my second set of AVS Sports on the rear, still original fronts, and I like them a lot. There's not much rain in SoCal, but when it did, they performed just fine with no ill behavior (as long as you don't expect miracles). In the dry, they stick well and I've found them predictable at the edge. I did find the rears getting noisy near the end of their life, and now that the fronts are getting there, I'm hearing more rumble ...but then again, this is par for the course as tires wear. Don't know how the noise compares with the other popular tires. Given their price and overall performance, I think they're an excellent tire. Depending on what's available when I need to replace all four, I might go with these again.

I just bought a 993 last month and it came with 16" conti's. I bought some 18" rims and put on some new AVS sports. The difference was amazing. I thought I would end up with a rougher ride but actually handling and ride improved beyond my wildest dreams. I think the tires from the PO may not have been balanced and were near their end of life, but I am very happy. Keep in mind that I have never had any other tires to compare them to and am a new porsche owner.

Ron:

I ran the AVS sports, N-rated, 225-40X18F 265-35X18R on my RS replica for about 6K miles. ALthough the tires performed well, I found them to lack personality in terms of driver feedback. When pushed, the tires had little feedback trhough the wheel before letting go. Played with inflations and fouind they like a little lower inflations than what most folks reported. This made me a little nervous about a bent rim scenario, as well.

After a nail puncture, I elected to replace them with S-02's and am much happier. The S-02's are a little wider for the same size and much better feedback.

2cents....
