Default Unknown part found during oil change

Started an oil change last night, and attached to the magnet on the drain plug of my '95 993 was the following gem:

(no, sadly I am not talking about the penny :-)

I had been meaning to rebuild the top end when the clutch went out (I am at 150k mi) but it appears I am going to need to tear into the bottom end as well to see what damage has been done.

Anyone know what that is? Thanks,

-reiner

Looks a little like a valve spring washer, but not quite sure about the size. I'll be interested to see what it turns out to be. No strange noises,or odd running?

No noise that seemed to indicate I had it there. The car had been making a bit of a high pitched rattle noise when started very cold (eg left outside overnight) for just the last 3 weeks, but nothing if it was in the garage.

Drove it before the oil change and everything seemed ok. Going to consult my local expert on Monday (he's oof for a training till then). Will let you folks know when the mystery is solved..

This is on the tank drain or on the crankcase drain?

Sorry I can't identify that part either, but thank goodness the magnet did its job, because it already had a few internal collisions. It is good luck that it didn't wreak havoc inside.

Be well

I havent been inside the Porsche engine so dont know for sure, but I'd agree it looks like a valve spring washer. After looking at the 993 PET, it looks like it could be a smooshed washer that goes above the springs and between the collet. But I dont get how that could fall into the bottom of the engine. If a valve was missing, you would probably notice, and the washer would fall into the cylinder and be pushed out the engine. I'm also interested in what that is.

I would have guessed a valve spring retainer, but that is just a guess!

Looks like a penny to me. 100 of 'em will get you a buck.

Not a valve spring retainer--too small. 6mm shoulder washer.......but from what? If it were a pre-993 engine, I'd say a rocker shaft washer. Totally different way of attaching the rockers with the hydraulic lifters, though.

Sadly, I've not had my hands into too many 993 engines to be able to ID stuff like this from memory.

Hopefully we'll have plenty more suggestions coming!

I would say there's no way it's any part of the valve train. I do not think it could travel through the oil passages into the crankcase. You need to determine EXACTLY what it is before driving any further. Finding particulate shavings of metal in the oil is bad. Finding whole parts is catastrophic. Good luck and let us know what the outcome is.
Hopefully it was dropped into the lower end during some lower end work and made its way to the the drain plug. If it was attached to a component and came off I would have my heart in my throat. Sorry, but I worry about costly repairs regularly.

Wonder if this snuck in at the factory somehow. Doesn't look like anything I saw during my recent top end rebuild. Not familiar with the bottom end, but it doesn't look like anything from Mike J and Vorsicht's photo sagas of their bottom end rebuilds.

I'm thinking it looks like the washer that holds a through bolt o-ring.
