Mike,

Glad you took and post those reference pictures. They are often my go-to for trying to see what something looks like.

It looks like a through bolt washer to me. Can you get a caliper on it and estimate the size? That would help a lot!

How did it get there? As said earlier, with the valve covers off it can get in through an oil return tube. It did not have to come from your engine, maybe the engine was out for something and a sloppy shop lost a washer they never found.

I think you said you bought the car with 90k and it now has 150k, so whatever it is, its been there awhile with no apparent ill effect. Maybe it was wedged in for most of that time and just came loose, maybe its just been sitting pretty at the bottom of the pan waiting to come out.

I dont want to offend you but is there any chance you recently switched shops and maybe someone stuck it in during a recent oil change?

Definitely not a case thru-bolt washer (pic attached). My vote is that it got dropped in through the oil return tubes via valve cover removal as others have suggested.

That could be it -- I don't see that part in PET for 993, however. I did replace the valve covers myself, so this could have snuck in during that procedure.

I took a quick measurement with the ole digital calipers and got the following:

Outer Diameter: 18mm
Inner Diameter: 6mm

I spent 1 hr with PET and a flashlight & mirror over the engine and couldn't find anything that was a washer like missing from where it should be.

Im feeling a bit better if it made its way across the crossover tube... hopefully it stayed out of the way of the crank/layshaft.

This is like a murder mystery thread! Did you inspect remove 7 to see what's under there?

I don't remember mine having that part. I do remember the washer being imbedded in the plastic shroud. Maybe the early cars were different.
I would cut open the oil filters, and check for any metal shavings,as a precaution.

No kidding. I kind of thought of that, but given I have taken so few 993 engines apart, I couldn't remember if it was on these or only an earlier engine thing. Which basically was the secondary A/C bracket on an 3.0 SC.

PET for 993 says that there are two 930.126.135.01, both on the back side of the shroud - both of those are accounted for.

I have an early (March) 1995 build, so it could be that they were using 964 shrouds and/or still using those washers on the right hand side. Or, one of the pressed in washers came out... etc.

I am pretty good about putting shop towels in spaces where I can drop things, however with the valve covers off there is a lot of surface area to block.

When I get the engine out this weekend, it will be much easier to go over everything and see if we find something missing. I'd like to know what side it came in on (guessing the right hand side now) so that I can check for damage to cams, rockers, etc.

Car couldn't wait for spring for this to happen? Weatherman says it will be 30deg in my garage this weekend!

I just dumped my 5 gallon "man bucket" on the garage floor and I have nothing.

Another thought, and this is a stretch. What's going on with the bushing/bearing surfaces of the chain ramp pivots...

Your car would sound like a 1970's pinball machine though.

Lastly, you deserve a virtual gut punch from all of us if you dropped the drain plug in an old oil catch.

I wish the answer were so easy! I have a lift in my garage, and I set my oil catch basin on top of a transmission jack so I can stand under the car.

As I unscrewed and removed the plug, the mystery part was hanging off the magnet...

Those washers as shown by Colin are part of the shrowd in the 993's. My car is an Aug '94 Build and has the 993 part not the 964 part.

The shape and measurements look awfully similar.
