Day 10: San Francisco 100 miles
I picked up the car from FD Motorsport in Brentwood. All I can say is wow. The Stage IIIs are great. Loud and gruff. I think they really come to life above 3500 rpm. They sound smooth, deep and race car like.
Thanks again to Darin and Mark. The tires feel great and I feel confident driving back to Chicago now.
New tips
Great minds at work
Cool FD Motorsport T shirt
We drove up into the hills above Oakland and Berkeley. Amazing how the car handles and sounds. I let my friend drive it. He did not want to give up the wheel.
The rest of the day was more sight seeing and hanging out. Tomorrow drive back and try to get to at least Salt Lake City.

Day 11: San Francisco to Rawlins, Wyoming 1100 miles(!)
This trip back to Chicago was no pleasure cruise. My nephew has his 10th birthday party on Friday and I have 1 and a half days to do about 1700 miles.
I got out the door at about 4:45 am San Francisco time. The roads were clear so I knocked down some easy miles. I made it to the Donner Pass by 7 and took this photo. It is beautiful up there.
I was frequently above triple digits on this portion of the trip once I left California. As a matter of fact, I did 1100 miles in about 14 hours. An average speed of 79 mph for the 14 hours. Pretty awesome. I didn't see many cops.
I hit the Great Salt Lake around 2 or so. What an eerie and desolate place. I wish I had more time to check out Bonneville.
My goal changed from Evanston, Wyoming to Rawlins because I was making such good time. I rolled in around 8 before the fireworks. It promptly started to pour. I ate at a super sketchy Taco John's and went back and hit the hay. I was drained.
Day 12: Rawlins, Wyoming to Lincoln, Nebraska 550 miles
An easy day. I started before sunrise in hopes of making Lincoln by midday for the party. Somewhere in far eastern Wyoming right after sunrise I got an unexpected visit from a Wyoming state official in a shiny car with flashing lights. She bestowed a certificate upon me and requested that I donate some money to the state treasury. She also informed me that I had earned a $10 discount for wearing my seatbelt. Sweet.
Again I was off and running(and not at extra legal speeds. I made it to Lincoln by 1 and all was well. I even beat my nephews in a water battle. It helps when you are twice as tall as they are.
Party, food, beer, TV, bed.
Day 13 Lincoln, NE to Chicago ,IL 528 miles
Today was super easy. I wanted to get home so that was the wind beneath my tires so to speak. The only event was an ocular migraine in both eyes(!!!!) at sunrise. That made the trip through Iowa truly psychadelic. Seriously.
I got home at 2 on the nose and the car was still running ok. I was amazed. I did notice that the main fan assembly is making noise so I might tear it apart and check the bearing next week once I have decompressed.
The Fister IIIs are killer. Do not be mistaken, they are loud. A good awesome loud but loud nonetheless. I was having fun pulling out of gas stations on the trip and watching people rubberneck looking for the hot rod only to see my filthy 911. Ha! Made you look.
Great trip. I am music geek and I spent the majority of my car time listening to many records.
For other music lovers, here are my 5 favorite records on this trip:
1. Chris Wollard and the Ship Thieves--Canyons: This rootsy rock and roll record is kind of gruff and very melodic just like the Hot Water Music songs that he has sung on over the years.
2. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit--Live: Jason was part of Drive by Truckers, who are great as well. This live solo venture is super soulful. He has a fantastic southern country voice and the band kills it. Lonely music for a lonely drive.
3. The Lawrence Arms--Oh, Calcutta: These Chicago punk rockers were on the stereo when I got pulled over. I don't hold it against them. Punk rock singalongs for the damaged souls.
4. The Gaslight Anthem--Handwritten: Some New Jersey punk rock and roll with vast amounts of heart and guts. I love these dudes.
5. Frank Turner--The First 4 Years: The record title borrows from Black Flag's release of the same name but differs in style. This is folk music a la Billy Bragg. Totally wicked for the long drive when you can pay attention to words. Great stories.
I bought some great LPs on the trip. Here is the haul.
Thanks to everyone for following this narrative. I can't believe I went where I did in less than 13 days. I love my car. It has tested me but I also got my licks in too. I am home and safe and everyone is psyched.

Oh man, it's over too soon. I've loved reading this!
What a trip, I want to do something similar one day but as we all know, kids, work and life gets in the way.
I'm glad you made it home without incident.
