first time it came out like ****. Second time still ****ty but better than first time but now im getting a lot of wind noise when cruising on xpressway and its driving me crazy! Where would I go to have this job done professionally? Is this a job for an upholestery shop or regular repair shop? Anyone here ever have this done, cost? Would someone here care to do it for me $$$?

Your frustration is clear in your posts. I'm sorry for the travails you are going through, but in my case I enjoyed reading a post for a change that is more reflective of my own experiences, instead of "replaced the clutch and rebuilt the transmission yesterday, here are 600 perfectly focused pictures". Good for you for trying, and I don't know what a panel shop is either.

 

Im glad you can relate I did however replace my own clutch on the 944, no sweat(well maybe a lil sweat)

I would ask a independent shop that specializes in Porsche if they would do it. My indy does seals so I'm sure he would do the sunroof seal as well. I've heard it can be a real Biatch to the newcomer.

I think a panel shop cuts wood trim panels for the interior of VW buses.

 

I have not done a trim seal, but I have polished my crank.



I have heard its a bear to do this trim, and often takes a few tries. If you use a body shop, make sure they have done it before. I have only seen a few that are perfect.

 

My first attempt came out like crap as well...bought another seal from a generous Rennlist'r but haven't had the nerve to have another go at it. Sort of waiting for the 'last ride' of the season so there is no time constraint to complete the job.

Like 4 months...

I think my mistake was assuming the 'round' edge would be just at the top of the gap when the sunroof is completely closed. So I placed the new felt accordingly. Now, ( sorry no pictures tonite ), there is a 1/8" gap at the rear of the sunroof between the sunroof, ( to which the felt is attached...) and the car roof. The front felt, ( attached to the car roof ), is squeezed up proud and looks like hell.

I wanted to rip the whole thing out after I saw how it turned out but resisted the urge until I have time to install the second new set of felts.

I swear to god it was easier to replace the oil pressure sending unit than the bloody roof felts. I will install the new set absolutely FLUSH with the roof. Can't be any worse.

my sunroof felt was done by the PO, it sticks up far too high and makes a ton of noise on the highway.

As my post "Repainting my 993" progresses, this part of the work will soon be done. My body and paint guy Phil has shown me the felt and explained the process. Even he says it is very tricky. At over 30 years working on all manner of Porsche, it seems like this is best done by the pros.

 

I've doen this 4 times now. Only this last time does it look ok.

I am and big DIY'er but I am going to pay to have this done. Around here most Porsche Shops don't want to do it, they told me to take it to a Auto Body shop.

 

My seal was installed by a body shop and it is too high as well. It is actually installed backwards.

The round upper portion of the seal should be facing the sunroof panel which fills in the gap on the front. The flat portion (backside) is glued to the body. The rear seal is glued to the panel with the round portion facing the body--again filling in the gap.
