Funny, I have the same holder, and no issues of losing bottles or cups.... even on sprited mountain road driving.

It's possible that Ilko's Passat holder lost the rubber "fingers" on the inside rim of the actual "holder" ring. That happens to all of them eventually and then stuff just flies around.

I had that cupholder for two weeks and it worked well. Then a couple of friends needed a ride and I was in a hurry and powered the seat forward forgetting about the cupholder. The mounting screw bent and jammed in the aluminum fitting. I took it off and could not get the screw out. I tried vice grips as a last ditch effort to unscrew it. Then I just dremeled it out. The screw used must be aircraft grade because it was very very hard to drill out.

I was pretty upset about it. I chucked it out of frustration. I use a thermos to carry my coffee to work now and don't drink coffee in the car. I am still kicking myself about it. My story is probably highly unusual though.

Thats exactly what happen to me - TWICE!!! Then I gave up and realized that I',m not smart enough for this solution.

So I moved to the solution in the central console from Prestige Parts in the UK and love it.

I also have the prestige parts one above. Note that it is also available from Pelican.

I also originally bought the one like the OP mentioned. I had the same thing happen that happened to Xavier LaFlamme. I have 2 child seats in the back. I had the holder mounted in the seat rail and my wife got in and moved the seat forward to give the kids more room and it popped off, bent the shaft etc. If someone wants it you can have it. Shoot me a pm.

Default I this an option?

I ran across this cup holder. Does anyone know what's behind the lower switch panel(red oval in console picture)? Could this work?

There is a fair amount of air space behind that, but cabling as well. You can pull off the switch consoles really easily and take a look behind. I doubt if there is enough depth, but its worth looking.

This is the one I have:

This is the one I have and no complaints about it from me. Only time I push the seat up far enough to disturb it is when I'm vacuuming the car.

I'm throwing my $.02 in for the cup holder from www.ultimatecupholders.com. The site states they don't have one for the 993 yet, but I went ahead and ordered one designated for the BMW E39 and it works just fine. Slipped it underneath the carpeted panel on the center console and it fits perfectly, resting on the floor in the passenger footwell. Total cost was $31 including shipping. highly recommended.

An easy DYI project is to remove your CD/cassette/change cup between the seats rear of the hand brake. Gut it out and make a cover for it with two round cup size holes in it out of heavy cardboard. wrap it in vinyl or leather, glue it to the top of the gutted out cup and there you have it . Easy to get to, holds two drinks, out of your way when shifting, looks like it was an OE part of the car. If you don't want to roll your own it can be had as an aftermarket item.

Check the sig. I have the Air1 and like it. I drive solo 98% of the time so it's not an inconvenience to constantly adjust the seat and re-secure it. And it accepts larger containers and even some square ones. Great product...somewhat pricey, but worth it. Requires no mods to the car.
