So it was hit in the front but in post #12 you mentioned poor masking at the rear window. Coming in late and sounds like it did not work out. I wonder if there was more damage that originally stated.

Somehow missed this thread. The car i talked about was polar silver, very pretty but he was asking too much, especially in light of the repairs to thr car.

You guys are right, it sounds too good to be true.

For thosed poo-pooing the turbo, i just got back from a track day and a very long (1.3 mile) autocross. And all i have to say for the turbo is MOTHER OF GOD WHAT A CAR!!!

We had some nice straights and the endless power is addicting - with great brakes to boot. The awd saved my *** a few times (except for the time i did a good few rotations during a spin...lol!)

Cheers

Mike

Mike, just to clear the air - I would not poo-poo the TT. But as a personal preference, turbocharged cars come third after normally aspirated and supercharged ones for me. On the other hand I know people who would not give up their turbo Audis no matter what you offer them.

I guess is so subjective... to me power means almost nothing. Just as an example, here are the results from this Sunday's autocross )see class J): http://www.boston-bmwcca.org/Autocro...=597&year=2012 My Miata has untouched OEM engine with a whole 140 horses when they are not on strike. The course is 1.2 miles. The two GT3-RSs are at 450hp+ from what I understand. The turbo cars in class are all, shall we say, slightly massaged for more power than their stock engines.

So, I guess to each their own. I'm really glad you love your TT! That kick in the back is definitely addictive.

"Found this black on black 1996 993 TT. With about 78 K miles."

"Vehicle Black 1996 Porsche 911 Turbo H6-3606 3.6 CAN
VIN WP0AC2992TS375082
Odometer 129,434"

confused...is it 78K or 129K?

cosmetics look/sound beat...imo, probably the tip of the iceberg.

i would take issue with "GENERAL OBSERVATIONS Vehicle in average condition for year and mileage"...if thats average condition...would like to see what below average looks like.

i would have spent money doing compression/leakdown first...instead of cosmetic/visual report.

Default Thanks a bunch guys!

first of all a big thank you to Alec from Riegel Auto Tuning in Calgary. Very knowledgeable and helpful

I would like to say that all observations made are my own opinion and may be different from others. I have no attention at all to encourage or discourage any potential buyers for this vehicle, or badmouth the owner or vehicle.

So where do I start... arrived in Calgary around midnight, showed up at Riegel early this morning. After an visual inspection I noticed lots of issues with this vehicle.

I was informed the car had previous damage on the left side of the vehicle. It shows the complete vehicle has been re-painted, and done very poorly. Doors and side panels on both sides show the "ridges" you get when you don't want to put more time and efforts in sanding. Fill is showing on the fenders from chipping. The left rear pillar shows sanding marks and an uneven feel where fill, or maybe a weld has been applied. Extreme road rash/rock damage on both rear fenders/flares. Overall small dents, chips and scratches.

The inside floor covering has a big hole. Interior is very dirty and is pretty worn. Hardbacks are re-painted. (previous color yellow) and heavily scratched. Chair covering is separating from hardbacks.

Front is clean, no rust or acid spill from the battery.

The PPI showed there will be future work on the engine. Did not make the expense of a compression/leak down test.

At this state, the car is painfully "worn looking". There is hope, but it will take a lot of time and money.

I bailed on it because:

1- I already have a large project (1978 SC) don't need a second one
2- It is a car with history, badly repaired and the (very rough) estimate for a window-out repaint will be exceeding 10K.
3- Engine needs attention, a conservative estimate given by professionals is at least 5-7K but probably far north of that number.
4-Interior needs lots of TLC and some parts replaced.
5-wheels got curb rash. Another added expense.

If we do the math: 37-39K purchase +, paint, engine repairs, inside, wheels and unforeseen, I would not be surprised if the 55K will be passed very soon.

And at the end you will still have a relatively high mileage vehicle with a history....

Besides all that: $200 for PPI, $250 travel expenses and 14 hour road trip through the Rockies with my "partner" petrol head son....Priceless.......

Wow, looks like someone went at that respray with a rattle can. Pitiful condition. You did right to walk away. If the PO's are willing to let something as obvious as that slide, you can only imagine how the internals/mechanicals have been treated.

Thank you for your opinions. I did not have much time last few days to reply or give answers. Sorry about that, but here we go...!

I've verbalized what value I see in it (to the tune of $10K+). Others looking for a driver TT will see even more (Mike J comes to mind immediately). But, again, why are you looking at this car if that's not what you'd want?
What I am looking for is a nice summer driver. I am open minded to a lot of cars, even some non Porsche....This one came on my path and I would be stupid if I don't check it out...

I have lots of room in the shop, and another project on the go. I am not shy of some work but this is a complete new project. More about that in the following post......

What I'm saying is that a 993 TT is pretty far in concept and execution from your SC. I know which car I'd like better (hint, it's not the TT). You'd have to decide for yourself. If you _want_ a TT to enjoy driving it as opposed to looking at it and cleaning fingerprints off of it any time your kid touches it in a garage - this one is probably a good buy. If you want to make a quick buck (or ten thousand bucks) - this one is probably a good buy. If you are not sure why you'd want this thing (like me, I've passed on several TTs because this is not the car I'm interested in), why buy yourself a potential headache?

Sorry to be blunt, just trying to distill what I'm hearing here.
No worries being blunt! All comments appreciated especially if they are fair and unbiased!

129 kilometers, or 79K miles. Did the conversion for our friends south of the border....

And yellow wasn't the original color on the HB sport seats either. I can see overspray on the leather.

Overall I have to say apart from the 'barn find' C2S this has to be the most unloved 993 I've seen. The owner should have been a lot more upfront regarding the condition before you made the 14 hour round trip. Very poor show.....

Rrental, I think you did an absolutely right thing by first jumping in and driving to check out this car and secondly by walking away. Not the right car for you based on what you've written of your requirements.

I'll be biased and offer that you might want to look at a nice 993 cab (I'm on my second one) as a good summer weekend car that is easier to find and maintain than a TT.

This definitely does not meet your criteria . .

Great post BTW - thanks!
