Default What would you do?

Found this black on black 1996 993 TT. With about 78 K miles. It has maintenance history from the last 11 years from a well established Porsche repair outlet. Repairs done include clutch, rear wheel bearings, steer rack, etc..

The car has been in an accident in 2000 with moderate non-structural damage on the left front side. Repaired true the Porsche dealership.

PPI is getting done right at this moment, and the repair guy told me on the phone its a decent car that really needs some TLC.

Price just under 40K.

What would you do if PPI comes out good(reasonably, under $2K repairs) ? I am not looking for a garage queen at all. I would not mind working on it and drive it.

All comments appreciated!

I would fix it, clean it, then drive without worries. Good find and good luck with ppi.

Good luck on the ppi. This car has that unloved look. Might be a gem in the rough, ready for a lot of TLC?

Not a fan of black cars, so I'd pass on that aspect alone. However, if I did like black cars, I'd go for it. Seems to be priced right for a driver/mild project car.

Is that a beer bottle in the center console?

Good luck!

looks a bit ratty and i don't like the yellow in the interior, but it has sports seats and the price is good.

Is it a salvage title?

I would:

1. PPI
2. Assess outcome of PPI
3. Buy the car for best price knowing what it needs
4. Throw some $$ at it
5. Enjoy every second of the rebuild/TLC
6. Drive it like I stole it

Pending the outcome of the PPI - at just under 40K I'd be all over that. If you're able to do most of the work yourself (which I recall you are) then it sounds like the perfect car for you. But if the engine and turbos are pooched, then.. if you have to drop 15K into it to get the engine up to snuff, with the accident history you're getting into the reconsider zone. But you said you have all the maintenance history for the last 11 years - so fingers crossed - you should be good!

I agree with Mark on black cars, especially black sport cars.

But... what am I missing here? A TT with 78K miles for 40K? In Canada, no less? What PPI? At this price I'd fly in yesterday and drive it home, clean it up, drive it for the summer and sell it for $50K without any hesitation. If I was looking for a TT for myself it'd be even less of a no-brainer than that.

The price is really good esp for Cdn market. If mechanically sound I would say that's a great deal and if you can work on the car yourself even better.

Maybe the only other factor to consider is body or paintwork, that would prob be your biggest cost to factor in, again depends on your standards.

Although most will agree the $ can add up very fast on these cars.

It's really hard (and sometimes expensive) to undo abuse. And this car was not somebodies baby, which you already know. How much life has been lost because of this, who knows. Although the price is very attractive, go in with you eyes open and a budget set aside. Good luck!

Default in doubt....

Damn this is a though call. I wasn't looking for a N/A 993 and came across this TT. Just got of the phone with the guy performed the PPI. The outcome is ok, not great. Main issue would be:

From PPI: the front differential seals seeping,Cam chain covers leakage.Bank #1 cylinders leakage of oil[studs or o rings].minor oil blow by turbo,s--
normal for car that sits a lot.

More of a concern is the poor repair job. PPI guy says paint is chipping and poor masking shows at the rear window. Who knows what's underneath....

I don't mind some work but don't want a money pit.

Told the mechanic to hold off the compression/leak down test. Have to make up my mind first.

Report:

Vehicle Black 1996 Porsche 911 Turbo H6-3606 3.6 CAN

60 seconds with a paint thickness gauge will tell you what's underneath.

My TT had a moderately tough life before I got it. It was never going to be a concours queen without some pricy details. Cosmetics aside it is mechanically very strong. Some of the problems you mentioned are standard to the model. Oil leaks are one of the standard equipment items. It sounds like you have a strong sense of detail and that will go a long way making most of the car correct. After a deeper investigation into the collision repair I would say buy the car and enjoy it for the price people pay for some NA993's. You could have a very clean fun car that won't keep you up at night if you get a rock chip. Drive it hard and enjoy it. Something that is more difficult to justify with a $70K low mileage TT.

OP, try to decide what it is that you want. It doesn't sound like you want this TT in a first place so you don;t see the value. If that's the case, don;t buy it, you will not enjoy any of it.

I've verbalized what value I see in it (to the tune of $10K+). Others looking for a driver TT will see even more (Mike J comes to mind immediately). But, again, why are you looking at this car if that's not what you'd want?
