I've tried searching for what's happening but all I can see are threads where the car stalls at stop lights, stalls decelerating, or rpm idle issues.
On Friday I started up my car and let it sit for 5 mins to warm up when it just stopped. I started it back up again and no stalling. Pulled onto the main roadway and after I shifted into 3rd there was a strange loss of power for a millisecond and then all good.
This morning I turn on the car again, let it warm up for 5 mins and again it dies. But has run fine since.
I'm thinking perhaps time to replace the spark plugs considering the loss of power above?
Other than these occurrences the car runs fine. What could it be?
For sure, swap out the DME relay to see if that solves the problem first. If it doesn't, next step would be to check the ground strap - if it's the original exposed braided style it might be rusted/corroded and making an intermittent connection. It seems like a lot of people have been experiencing issues with that lately - it's an age related thing.
A friendly "for what it's worth"......Starting these cars and letting them sit at idle to "warm up" isn't good for the engine. Factory warm-up procedure is start, let idle 20-30 seconds until oil pressure builds, then drive off, avoid WOT run-ups until the oil is at proper operating temp and oil is circulating through the oil tank, then drive it like you stole it. Warm-up at idle probably has nothing to do with your stalling problem, but nonetheless is not good for your engine.
Next stop was the glove box! I remembered you had mentioned something about the extra DME's.
Thanks Bruce. I'll give it a go later today.
Hey Cam did you end up solving this issue? I drove the C4S to the office today
and had a stall at a light..rpm guage bounced slightly at idle under 1k..then
died out. Freaked the hell out of me!! I have an extra DME so I'll give that a
shot if the problem happens again on the way home ...I hope it's nothing more
serious.
Hey Jakob - my car has run fine since I posted this so I've held off on replacing the DME. Odd indeed. Its now in the shop on a lift awaiting the rear shock mounts and Walrod bushings to arrive. Front coilovers already installed and a trick new 6-speed shift **** and boot which is guaranteed to make the car faster!
As everyone stated above I'd replace it first and then see if the car dies again.
