Hey Guys......First off, GREAT SITE, it has already helped me out on a variety of questions / concerns, it seems as if everthing I've run a search on has given me an answer without posting, except this. I know it sounds like a stupid question but here goes. I recently purchased a 1996 993 C2. Strangely enough the lug nuts are mostly silver on one side of the car and the opposite side's lugs are mostly black, and yes I've cleaned all lol. The wheels are 18" Turbo Twists, OEM Porsche. I was looking into having a fellow on another site Powder coating them and wanted to know which color is correct. Thanks......Mark.

Will powder coating work on lug nuts from a durability perspective? Just wondering. OEM is black on all the pre-993 911's ever seen. However, the anodizing on my 993 when I purchased the car almost looked gunmetal by comparison.

I put polished lug nuts on my Speedlines and hit the top with a 3M pad giving them a brushed look. I like it better than black lug nuts on a silver wheel.
If I was going to shoot them black, I think a rattle can would work pretty well.

not sure what your powder coating quote was,
but 20 new oem lug nuts will cost you 165,
after market about 100,
1 spray can of duplicolor high temp gloss black 10-15 bucks.
or the boothe design stuff

The guy has done them before, the pics he has posted look nice and has quoted me $25 plus shipping. So is the consensus Black or Silver? Thanks Guys.

Powder coating them will certainly be more durable BUT I would not want any coating on the cones of the lug nut.
You can use that lug nut socket with the plastic insert available from Pelican Parts to protect the finish as long as possible.
I'm just going to glass bead mine, paint them and then bake the paint. Another winter project.

I believe they come black. Mine are mostly black
and the ones I've seen from Porsche are black.

Now THIS is why this site is phenominal. I had been searching for a "cushoined" lug nut socket and hadn't any luck, now I know where to get it.
Black OEM and instruct Mr. PowderCoater to avoid PC'ing the cones.
I had thought about the blasting / baking thing also, but for ~$35 alll in I'll avoid spending an afternoon messing around, the paint cost along with not stinking up the wifey's fancy oven. Meatloaf.....MMMMMMMMMM.
Thanks again fellas.......Mark.

As for bead blasting, the lug nuts look fantastic when cleaned with a fine glass bead - nothing else necessary (I've experimented on a handful of spares that I have). If I were to refinish mine, I'd glass bead, etch prime, & finish with high-temp low-gloss black (DupliColor).
I would not powdercoat lug nuts - the finish will be thicker than paint and could fail when torqued (think of the candy covering on an M&M).

You know I've thought about this for a bit and over the years I've just settled on having two sets of lug nuts. One for regular use on the car and one for when there is going to be a bit of wheel off maintenance. I only use a soft socket on the good lugs. If going to get tires or to the wrench I replace with the spare set myself. This keeps the "good" set looking good for years. When the "good" set finally starts showing signs of age I just rotate in a new "good" set. All in all probably cheaper and less hassle than worrying about how to refinish lug nuts every few years.
