I have to tighten the engine one with a wrench, I cant get my hand in there to hand tighten well enough. I try to do it as lightly as possible

You can if it is torqued to specification.

Hand tightening is fine as long as you have access to the filter. In some cases, you don't unless you have hands an eighth of an inch thick.

Not all of them are due to the "overzealous owner tightened it with a wrench" (and how do you know it wasn't the previous shop). Mine was stuck thanks to the rubber seal which was dry, even though it was well oiled upon installation. I don't take a chance anymore and use silicone grease on the rubber seal instead of oil.

We only use extra virgin harp seal oil on filter gaskets.

some might think it is overkill.
experience has taught us otherwise.

So who sells this? That one fro Autozone doesn't look to be the same?

I used to have a 10in bosun spike I would use to remove stubborn filters. But there is no room with the 993. It was funny this year when we were changing the oil on Scarlet, Mike J asked why is this oil filter so tight, who put it on. My reply was YOU. Even with proper hands doing the job, they can get a bit snug.

Based on my experience, the rubber seal tends to set when left in place for a long time....like a year.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.... I think its the extreme heat cycles you guys put on the car that is causing the filters to snug up so far.

i figure there are two options - one is the filter is hard to get off, or the filter falls off when you are driving - which one would you like?

I am going to switch to using a torque wrench on the filters. I know the secondary filter is very sensitive on turbos, so I need to figure out how much torque is right. They even resorted to putting a band clamp on the filter, hand tight, and then use racing wire to make sure the filter does not unscrew.

So, what is the torque spec on the filters? 20 ft-lbs?

Cheers,

Mike

That is the time frame between oil changes on my car so that could be a factor.

No, I don't think it was the heat cycles and I do prefer that the filters stay on .

Do you have the shop manuals on the turbo 993's. I didn't download it but there was a site a couple of years ago that had the 993 manuals online. I am not sure whether the shop manuals for the turbos were/are available. If they were, the torque settings would be in the manuals. The manuals would probably be a great thing to have if they are available.

11 Nm (8 lbf.ft) for the oil filter on my BMW motorcycle which should have the same base diameter as our Porsche oil filters...they both take the same Hazet 2169 socket wrench.

I also use Dow Corning Vacuum Grease on the seal.

No spec in the Porsche repair manual...firmly seated, then turn another 1/2 turn.

I don't see that working very well if your oil filter has reverse threads.....

i'm doing my oil change for the first time and the filter to the engine is stuck. I went and bought one at autozone and it's bent as I turn. is there another way out? I'm almost done as this is the last filter to get out and refill the oil. Thanks.

This is what I use. It works fine for me, even if the filter is tight. I got it at Autozone.
