Thought I would pass this on. I changed my oil this weekend and ran into a stubborn oil filter. It would not come off. I mean it would not budge. I stripped out the regular oil cap wrench. So I came across this at the local auto parts store. It has a 3/8" drive on the end. The cool part is, the harder you turn it, the tighter it grips the oil filter. Works great. I cannot see how it would not remove even the most stuck on oil filters. Plus, it only cost me $5.99 and appears to be very rugged.

was there a brand name?

we get cars in the shop at times, and the previous shop or owner have cranked it on so tight it is a bear to get off.

For those using a regular oil cap wrench experiencing the above but need to get the filter off now, the following solution works.

My Hazet 2169 oil filter wrench for my BMW motorcycle (and also for my 993) slipped over the facets of a previously torqued-to-spec oil filter. There is zero chance of getting any grip on it as it sits in a deep well.

I drilled 6 holes; one at each cast injection point and used 6 sheet metal screws screwed into the oil filter. Tip: punch a hole in the end of the filter to drain the oil first.

 

I've been using this one for over 10 years. Worked every time no matter how tough the filter is screwed on. It's a simple and tough piece that bites into the filter. Paid about $5 for it, and it had worked better than any tool I've ever used.

Another nice thing is that it expands and fits lots of filter sizes. However, it only loosen. Can't tighten.

When I was working as a Goodyear Mechanic I bought one of those from Lisle. It's by far the most versatile filter wrench I own. I know I paid more than $5 for mine though... of course it came off the $nap-On truck.

 

I bought one identical from NAPA. Believe it was a Lisle also.

 

Same for my three Snap-On torque wrenches.

I could have bought the same ones minus the Snap-On stamping from Precision Instruments. I know now.

Good tools are the best investment.

Cool!! I won one of those in a raffle at a car show this past summer. Haven't had a chance to use it yet but it's good to know it will work on the next 993 oil change.

 

I've got a cheapo 3 finger version of the self tightening oil filter wrench. It works great.

 

I have been using the self-gripping one when filters are too tight - and it works like a charm. I usually use my normal socket type one, but once in a while I need a bit more horse power....

 

Same here. I've used mine (Lisle brand) for more than 10 years and nearly 80 oil changes on my 237,000-mile '01 4Runner.

When you do 15+ oil changes every day having the best oil filter wrench possible is a big plus.
DO NOT TIGHTEN YOUR FILTER WITH A WRENCH! A clean hand and a "snug" tightening is all that's required.
I can remember more than one filter that was literally tore in half trying to remove because an overzealous owner tightened it with a wrench. It's amazing what some car owners do to their cars...
The Lisle gripper tool works very well, it will eventually squish a filter if you keep applying pressure. I probably have 10 of the "cap style" filter wrenches, most of which I never used.
