Hi Paul,

We heard from your brother that your engine caught on fire! I hope you are ok?

Do you know the cause?

Im very sorry to hear about that. I know how much money and time you have put into that project. Lets hope it can be re built or that you get paid our well from the insurance.

Regards

Ha.ha..word gets around quickly! Over filled the oil tank. I was going to have my alignment checked. I did this before on my OLD induction system but didnt realize that this was more severe with oil dripping to my exhaust headers because of the ITBs. Well I put off the fire with sand! My small fire ext didnt match up to the flames. If you have seen fully burnt cars, then you know how I was totally freaking out!

I will be getting a bigger fire ext! Heard that it happened to some guys at the GT3 forum.

Being a Christian, I really thank God for the car not burning to the ground. It could have. Maybe He is teaching my a lesson.

Good thing I didnt install my RSCS clubsport wing!

So car is going to the shop this week for some things to do. I have to change magnacor sparkplug leads, MAP vacum lines, and maybe a plastic valve cover in the right side. As well as fixing some wiring that burnt. I just had my painter do a fiberglass mold for the RSCS wing since my old one was slightly burnt. I have to re-paint my lid and some portions near the rear windshield.

At the end of the day, I was extremely dissappointed. But you have to set the line where your priorities are lined-up. I look at the glass half-full rather than half-empty.

Oh No !!! How did it catch on fire ???
I've over filled from time to time but for it to catch fire !!!

Is this a common problem with ITB's?
Must be the fuel injecting from the ITB's right?

Glad you are safe.

As Camlob stated, nothing to do with the ITB's, purely due to an oil leak from over-filling. Likely cause is that the oil breather system has been compromised due to the ITB set up, which is why we engineered an oil separator system for the 9m Race engines.

Camlob

I think your advice regards the extinguisher is very apt. I only have a 600 gram one bolted to the passenger seat. I will be increasing that from today!

I never have to add any oil to my car (maybe 2-3 times in 12 years) apart from annual service - but Im always aware these are aircooled cars and they run hot and even something getting caught up there or on the exhaust could cause a fire...

Best of luck with the resurrection.

Colin is correct. The oil breather system was not thought of well. In the first place, it wouldnt have happened if I over-filled it. Oh well.

It might take some time, but it will run.
