Tony -
I tried the Altec motorized plate for about a year, but with a lowered car it just hits too much, so I removed it and modified the plate a bit and mounted it in front of grill...although NJ DMV says all numbers and letters have to be visible on the plate. I don't know why they need to see "New Jersey" and "Garden State". PM me if you're interested in the motorized plate, you can have it for cheap.

I wouldn't put the license plate in the grille because it disrupts the air flow to the oil cooler.

I don't use my front license plate but I've parked on the street in Manhattan a couple of times and in those instances I just tape the plate to the bumper with gaffers tape. Haven't had issues using that method.

BTW, another way of doing this is if you attach rare-earth magnets to the inside of the bumper cover. Then just slap the plate when you need it and you're set.

Not too worried, just a tub behind the plate and there's space between plate and grill as it's mounted on front edge vertically. Both L/R grill ports haves a direct shot to OC/AC respectively...I even ditched those useless pieces of foam for air flow redirection when I did my turbo cap last year.

Yes, it is just the tub but it's recessed. My point is that the grille is there for a reason. If it wasn't necessary I'm sure the engineers would've filled it up. It creates an enormous amount of drag right there at the nose.

Didn't you know - "san francisco" is Spanish for "sheer lunacy."

Re: decal instead of front plate. I can only speak for NJ in that whatever DMV issues they want on there mostly because: 1. the police need a flat surface to bounce their radar off of and 2. the plate has reflectorized properties for night illumination. Concave application of decal may be noticeable...but then again, some states may not be too stringent in terms of enforcement.

Tommy-- Speaking of police & enforcement ^^, looks like you purposefully mounted your plate tangential to the ground?
IIRC, that would appease laws of some jurisdictions.

Regarding appeasing laws of physics & airflow...

From the "Inventiva Front License Plate Bracket-Group Buy" thread:

All that is behind the center grill is the front of the trunk tub, so my plate only blocked the tub.

Curve...yes, I am trying to comply with NJDMV, somewhat...while simultaneously preserving the natural beauty of an unmolested turbo bumper full frontal. I did try to save as much of the lettering on the top and bottom of the plate as possible (more appeasing) so I trimmed the top about 3/4" and then folded the bottom just above "Garden State" and under tag numbers. This created about an 1 1/2 tab in which I used two 1" x 1" pieces of industrial strength velcro on each corner to secure. On the top, I notched for the two snap-ins that interfered, then ran a 1/8" piece of electical tape along the cut edge for protection and press-fit the plate between the grill and nose. A closer view:

I have a printer to reproduce but it seems just about anyone can produce these on vinyl. The quality of the initial plate scan is critical.

How about a reflective background?
