Bent alternator shaft - help needed
I have been told by my mechanics that I have a bent alternator shaft and as a result, will need to replace the alternator, the impeller and the impeller housing. The part numbers he has provided are for the engine cooling fan and housing.
Is this correct rather than having only to replace the alternator. I find it odd that a bent alternator shaft requires me to replace the engine fand and housing too.
Rennlist advice would be much appreciated here.
TIA

did the fan contact the housing?
what was his hypothesis on why the shaft bent?
If you chewed up the fan by having it hit the housing, you probably will need to replace both, which seem to be a pricey.

Quadcammer,
Hypothesis on bent shaft is wear and tear. Seems that fan did not contact housing. I am trying to get to bottom of this and will talk to them in greater detail tomorrow.
Been trying to find place to buy housing if I need it and cannot seem to find online so far.

Not sure if they will ship to your location though.

I will send you a fan if need be, but before all that, check if the fan hit the housing, and if it did, I wonder how it could damage the housing. the fan flaps could get damaged, but the housing I doubt.
Second, if the fan did not touch the housing, the only part you need besides the alternator exchange, is the wheel hub which englobes the fan bearing, price EU is 100 euros. no; 96410605130
As for alternator exchange, cheap in US ebay, there are some without core charge.
awaiting more details

Darren, can you tell us a little more about how this "diagnosis" was made? Did you notice noise from the fan? A common problem (it's happened to my car) is the fan hub bearing wearing out - this causes a loud rattling noise from the engine bay - you cannot miss it! I suppose this can eventually cause a bent alternator shaft... I just haven't heard too much about bent alternator shafts here (but I'm not a qualified P-car mechanic either). If there is no damage to the fan or fan housing, you shouldn't have to replace them.

I had a bent alternator shaft once. The only thing I can think could have bent it was an over-tightened belt...But that's purely a theory.
I suppose I can see why a shop wouldn't want to mess with getting the old fan off the old shaft, as they can be a real PITA to budge. Replacing the housing makes very little sense though.

Mike,
I took the car in this morning as I noticed over the weekend that there was a low resonance when engine was between 2 to 3k rpm, like something was just a little loose and vibrating. Looked in engine compartment but could not see or hear anything. New shop manager called to tell me this afternoon that alternator shaft was bent and cause was wear and tear. he then said I needed to get:
alternator 964.603.156.01
impeller 964.106.015.31
fan housing 993.106.667.01
The alternator I can understand but both the fan and housing looked fine. I will talk to the head mechanic tomorrow to get to the bottom of this as the service manager is new and may not know as much about 993.
