Which is the preferable OBD-II tool for the 993? Is there a recommended place to purchase a tool and the software from?

I have the Actron 9180, it reads codes and resets the CEL, I got it off Ebay for about $80.
the codes are actually numerical and have to be cross referenced in Adrian's book, but it does the trick for me.

What do you want to do with it? If you're just looking to reset CELs, read codes and check emissions monitors ("readiness codes"), then most of the Actron, etc. scanners will suit you just fine for $30-150.

Want to get more detailed? That's a different story...

If you want to reset the airbag and get tighter integration with the Porsche electronics, you should check out the Durametric tool.

Does these generic OBD2 tools connect to the DME/Motronic unit only?
What about the CCU, Alarm, Airbag and ABS systems? The Scantool freeware presented many times here on Rennlist cover all these. Make a simple interface and Bob's your uncle. :-)

I have the Durametric enthusiasts tool. I don't much about it, but yesterday I managed to get it to clear an air bag fault. I was quite pleased. The cost quote to clear the fault from a few of the local shops ranged from $50 - $120. I bought if from a guy on CL for $100 and I am the second user out of 3. Apparently the cable has the ability (intelligence) to limit use to 3 different VINs.

If you are serious get the Durametric. It does a lot more then just resetting the lights. You can read specific sensors, & run test on on systems. You can also do data logging, & get real time data.

What is the price of Durametric system? BTW, Scantool can as far as I know also do all tests.

My Actron also has real time data, IAT, RPM etc... I have used those functions a little, but I don't have any mods that I am evaluating as such, so I don't need them. I don't think mine does data logging. If you are doing mods and want to evaluate effects, one that does data logging is probably a good idea.

I just wanted something that would give me the ability to read and reset CEL/MIL, anything beyond that for me is gravy.

I have used it also only a couple of times. Some things can fail, & being able to test them, or data log can narrow down the issue.

My C4 had a code for the HVAC. I thought it was the CCU. Then I ran the HVAC test on everything & it told me one of the servo's was not responding. Right there it saved me a CCU rebuild. It would have taken me a couple of days to dig out & test all the servo's with out the software.

I also did some IAT & CFM test with air filters & airboxes to see what was "best".

Thanks on the options of scan tools. The Durametric, looks like the ticket for all codes. In the end my father got an Equus off of Amazon. He just needs it for any codes that pop up, of course the pesky CEL one.

He is currently half way across the country with the car heading back to Maryland. Garage is now empty. It was a sad day to see the car pull out of the driveway and head off. The new search has begun.
