There is a real downside to running without an engine tray, besides upsetting the aerodynamics at high speed.
My car is lowered. Without an engine tray, my heat exchangers droop slightly. All it takes is backing out of a driveway for the edge of the heat exchanger to catch and get torn off. Ask me how I know

I realize this thread was started as a joke but but my new 993 (w/ 29k mi.) still had the tray on when I bought it. The 1600 mi. drive home was quite cold so it didn't bother me leaving it on for that. However as soon as I did my first oil change I took it off and put it in the shed. The tranny tray is also off but only until I clean it and the underside of the car (Not to BoulderBoBo's specs though). The engine has only one small seep and that's coming from the power steering area. This engine is extreemly oil clean, no other seeps/leaks but the engine tray will stay off.

I think I'll leave mine on, then when it becomes hard to find my unmolested pristine as from the factory 96 will be all that much more valuable while you non engine tray heathens regret your dog sledding shenanigans.

Supposedly, the engine tray is a must if you drive Autobahn speeds because of the flat bottom ground effects. I heard it can really upset the car w/o it, just like the rear spoiler needs to come up at speed. Even the manual says not to try top speed w/o the spoiler.
Mine is on as I always try for high triple digits, as long as it's safely possible.
