Default Possible Servo Motors or CCU Issue?

I recently had my a/c worked on in the 993 as it wasn't blowing cold at all. It's a reputable shop, they replaced the schrader valve (on the fill side) and filled with freon.

It's blowing nice and cold, but they told me that the air will only come out the middle vents and below the dash.

The controls to adjust which way the air moves aren't working. They said that it could either be the servo motors or the CCU itself. Anyone had a similar situation? Should I spend more money and let them diagnose it more, or is there something I can do myself to narrow down the issue?

Are you able to adjust the air flow pattern with hot air temp setting? That would rule out any air flap servo faults.
It's a simple task to verify the servo arm movements under the windscreen in the luggage compartment when operating the CCU controls.
Here's some leads, however to the very similar 964 system:

Soap,
Contact Brian (BS993), as he is the acknowledged climate control specialist around here. He recently sold his '95, but I'm sure he'll help you out.

Do you have access to a scanner? The CCU will store codes, & let you know if the CCU is toast, or if it is one of the servo's.

no access to a scanner. If this shop is a reputable shop and works on lots of Porsche's wouldn't they have been able to tell me that?

You would hope! My heater started acting really weird, I thought the CCU was toast, nope, just a burnt out servo. My Durametric scanner told me what one.

what's the cost of a scanner? How many servos are there in a 993? Does Streather's book tell the location of them?

I know there are at least 3, right under the front hood, behind the black plastic cover up at the fire wall.
