Default Airbox modification

Has any one here done a mod with the airbox? I'm looking at two. Both of them utilize the lower portion and say they provide more air and more "sportcar" sound. One states it adds HP (which is really not my concern right now). Are there any things to look out for?

I cut my airbox and opened it up like acup airbox. Any "horsepower" gains will be nearly insignificant.

I bought a spare airbox cover off of Ebay and drilled the holes in it per the factory design. I think it sounds a bit better. Someone had made a template which I used but I can't remember exactly where I found it. I can look for it if you want it (MS Word).

Default Drilling the Airbox

The factory motor sound air box cover has holes drilled in the section towards the interior of the car. I understand that the holes are marked on the inside of the cover. There are alot of them and they are small in diameter.

The factory holes are located in a location that does not allow rain & car wash water from dripping onto the air filter element. If your car is not exposed to water, this may not be a concern for you.

I believe you'll need to keep the hose connected in the lower rear of the cover as it directs air flow someplace - I forget where.

So SKM, are you saying that if I remove the cover, the locations for the holes to be drilled will be obvious and that all I need to do is drill them out? I also read somewhere that the top is a bear to get back in on the 993. Know anything about that?

The answer to your question is yes... I bought a second cover and used the hole outlines to drill out one cover. At WOT I get a nice growl from my engine bay

No problem, I had it on my computer when I had found it a while ago. When you take off the airbox cover you will see the pattern already on the inside. The reason for the template is so that you can drill them from the outside going in so that there are no burs and it comes out much cleaner.

I don't know I haven't done mine yet. It's next on my list of things to do. The way I look at it is you are going to have to get the cover off at sometime to change the air filter so it can't be impossible to do.

einreb92, weren't you trying to buy a 993 recently? Did you finally find one? I'm guessing by these posts that you did.

einreb92, you were asking if it's hard to get out to modify? For the factory motorsound mod (with all the little holes) you're only modifying the cover - pops right out in like five seconds and goes back in in ten.

Geets, I've been hanging around this forum for so long I feel like a stalker I did find a car out of Tampa ('97 993). I'm very excited about starting my new relationship with something that has been a dream of mine for more than 40 years! It is on a carrier as we speak and should get here to Philly by tomorrow or Tuesday at the latest. The midnight blue baby (gray leather interior) has more miles than I would have liked (109k), but I think the price point was about as good as I was going to get - even in this market. The same mechanic took care of this car for over eight years and he did a PPI and said the car had been very well taken care of by guys who also own airplanes and did what they were supposed to do. Its got some good mods (turbo suspension) split turbo front spoiler and rear RS tail. Thanks for asking.

Cool, glad to hear it. I'm a newbie/stalker myself and just got my car this past month. I have also been waiting a long time for mine about 25+ years. Post some pictures when you get a chance. Also I'm just across the river from you in Belmar, NJ. Well about 1 hour away but in a 993 that's nothing. If you are ever up this way drop a note. Maybe we'll bump into each other at some local get together one of these days. Welcome aboard! This place is great!!!
