I think it's M6x40 from my manual. But would like a second opinion. I don't know that I can round up a tranny jack for this job either. ****.

Ok, I'm pretty close to busting out my tranny jack. I have the CV's off, starter wires off, slave off, linkage all disconnected and fork shaft cover off. I can't see anywhere to insert this 6mm bolt to pull the fork shaft out. Looks like I have a shaft with a retainer plate on it, but no hole for the 6mm bolt. Also, how many bolts are there holding the tranny to the engine? And does the starter have to come all the way off or just the wires off? And is there a thorough write up of this procedure somewhere? I'm going from my own knowledge of what needs to come off and am probably missing a few things. I really need to have this out tonight and on a stand before my mechanic buddy comes over to help tomorrow. He's in ill health and I can't have him doing physical labor with me.

Rick,
This is what Neil wrote after we dropped his tranny: 993 transmission drop.

there is a steel retainer plate behind the bellhousing vent 'in' that has a 6mm bolt (10mm head) that you remove, once this is out of the way and the plastic plug removed, you will see the cross shaft end that is threaded.

There are four nuts to move to separate the gbx from the engine. one is one of the start nuts. Do yourself a favor and remove the starter completely.

Yup, that plastic plug was what was fooling me. I thought the only hole there was the one on the left for the retaining plate. I had resigned myself to pulling the whole drivetrain out, had gotten my mufflers off when my buddy called and said there's a plastic cap to remove and that's where the bolt goes. Anyway, I need new muffler hardware and a good shine up anyway.
