Last night I installed Fister Stage 2 mufflers and wanted to share the experience with you guys.
Fist of all I have only had this car for about 3 weeks. The car is basically stock with about 46k miles. I love the sound of the air cooled engine but the stock exhaust note seemed a little constipated. After reading through postings on this site I learned about the Fister exhaust modifications. Here is my summary of the experience.
Sound. The engine sounds great. At start up and idle, the engine has a much lower and throaty growl. It gurgles a little. I like that. At times it sounds like a V8. With the throttle wide open it is vicious
(at least for a street car). At cruising speed, inside the cabin it does not sound far from stock. Overall the sound is pretty awesome actually. ![rockon](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/rockon.gif)
Wifey's Impression. The sound is just right. Not too loud not too quiet.![thumbup](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/thumbup.gif)
Installation. The install was pretty straight forward although the existing fasteners on my exhaust were corroded beyond the point of reusing them. This is not a big deal. I got all new hardware at a local Ace Hardware store for about $17. The installation took about 2 hours. I used anti-seize on all the hardware so I can get back in there easily for future projects. If I had to do this install again, I could easily shave off 30 minutes and possibly more time. The workmanship, fit and finish on the modified mufflers in excellent.
Working with Darin. Darin is a great guy and was excellent to work with. Darin sent me a set of modified mufflers before I returned my cores. It is nice that there are still folks out there who will work on a handshake. The cost for his work is extremely fair.
Thanks. Thanks go out to all the folks who posed about this topic.

Well, it didn't take you long to go down the slippery slope..... Agree 100% with your description. I like the fact that the tone of the exhaust isn't too deep (so it doesn't sound "ricey" - is that a word?) And then once you open up the throttle, it is evil ![evilgrin](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/evilgrin.gif)

Wifey says I can't leave well enough alone.....There was a pool in my office how long it would be before the mods would start on the p-car...![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
I want to live with the car as is thru the fall and get to know it before I make other mods. The car has some differed maintenance items I need to attend to which will keep me busy. I was planning to tackle all of these projects myself.
front brake
Possible Future Mods in no particular order
I'm not sure what else....but once I start...it's hard to stop
Suggestions are welcone....

front brake
- pads
- oil leak on the lower valve cover 1 or both...
- secondary air
Possible Future Mods in no particular order
- suspension (recommendations welcome) Installed Stasis fully adjustable coilovers in my S4. 18" bbs...sweet! Michelin PS2s. The car handles great...but it beats the crap out of me.
- wheels
- get the radio reception to work better
- ipod connection to stock radio
- love to

Sounds like a good plan. Get some new bolts and gaskets for the valve cover, and that should do the trick (unless you want to shell out a few hundred bucks for the aluminum ones). Not as familiar with the SAI flush, but there's plenty of info on Rennlist regarding that.
Since you asked for suggestions, you're going to get a lot of responses here. For your suspension, I think the PSS10s is a good compromise for a street/track car. If it's only street use, the HD/M030 combo should be adequate. There are other more exotic coilovers that you can get, but these will be overkill for street use.
Oh, and don't forget to get your Rennlist membership.....

Do you have any photos of the mufflers?
When I purchased my car it had modified mufflers but I am not sure who's.
They were split in the center (not the end) of the of the can, then rewelded.
They do sound great with the cat bypass pipes, throaty at idle, quite cruising with no resonance and fantastic WOT.
Thanks,
Mike

Darrin... great clip. I'm actually glad I held out for the stage II. Have you done any motorsound mufflers with stage II?
Boulderbobo- Since you're now experienced with this install, any chance you can help a fellow CO RL'er with the install?
Thanks- JH

Do you have experience with others? Bobo
I had a Remus titanium "Sport" system on my R 1150 RS, and it would give a satisfying snarl, beginning at 3500 rpm. On an airhead RS, I had SuperTrapps, which were quite harsh, but they are, of course, adjustable.
Those are the only systems I have used. About all you can do is try to get onto a hexhead that has a different system, and see if you like it. It will be easy to sell your Remus if you decide to switch.
You might want to do some advanced searches in the hexhead site in the MOA forum and get some owner impressions.
