LOST MY GEARS, CAR STUCK IN 2ND!
so i was driving home and went to shift and my gears were gone. the car is stuck in 2nd gear. my guess is something in the linkage got disconnected. anyone have this problem before? the shifter will move front and back, no side to side motion whatsoever, and it does not do anything to the transmission regardless of shifter position

Sounds as though the bolt came out that couples the shifter flex joint to the input shift shaft to the gbx. Pull the tunnel cover and have a look. Lets hope for a simple fix.

no DIY that I know of. Just get the car on four jackstands. Grab a 10mm socket and ratchet, or the like, and remove the center tunnel cover. May need a phillips headed screwdriver as well.
Once the cover is off (also remove the plastic trans cover) you'll see a rubber shifter coupler close to the nose of the gbx. See if the shift rod is still connected.

..... also, look all the way forward for the ball cup attachment of the front pivoting shifter rod: the plastic cup insert can fail, causing the rod to drop off the ball.

A nice upgrade to fix this issue is to replace both ends with Heim joints. There are several threads on this topic. Your problem sounds fairly classic to this failure.

thank you guys so much for the input! i dont have jackstands, so i brought the car to my tech this afternoon he had time for me today.
im really glad that all signs are pointing toward a minor failure rather than something internal in the tranny/clutch. whew! i only have like 6 weeks til im putting it away for the winter
