Assuming a $3.00 per gallon increase
Let see, 6,000 km per year per car= 3,600 miles per year = 200 gals per year = $600.00 per year per car.
So will I keep my cars for $1,800 year, yes, and not much more to say on this.

CNBC's story yesterday said that $200 oil would equate to $5.50/gal. gas, where did $7 + come from? This country would shut down if thats the case. All 3 US auto makers would shut down, not being able to sell truck/suv's. Diesel would be $10 a gallon and with no pay increase, truckers would strike. This is just pure greed going on, not market or situation driven. Granted the powers that be, want to see things higher that $15 oil, but I can't believe Americans will stand for much more of this.
I could be wrong. Lets hope not Hate to think this is the new norm!

I don't have a NA 993, but my 964 gets the best mileage of my four cars, so I guess I should be driving it more now, not less.
Anyway, Porsches are a luxury. If you have to worry about how much gas you are using when you drive it, or whether lugging it below 3000k RPMs will save you a few bucks, perhaps you shouldn't have bought it in the first place. Even if you drive it 15k miles/year (which almost no one does), and get 15 MPG, you are talking about 1000 gallons a year. If gas goes to $7, from $2 a couple of years ago, you are talking about an extra $5000/year. Switch to a prius and triple the mileage and save $4500? What is the point?
And that is assuming worst case; really, people drive their 911s about 5k/year typically, and the alternative is not a Prius, and gas is at 4, not 7. So you might be spending an extra 4*(5000/16-5000/48) = $800/year on gas to drive your 911 vs a Prius. I think the choice is pretty obvious.

I'm currently paying around $120-$130 to fill up the 993 on super-unleaded, and $130-$140 to fill up my Audi with diesel (current price = £1.18 per litre ).
We are already being told to expect prices at around £1.50 per litre by late summer.
$7 per gallon sounds like a bargain to me ...

Chris, it's the futures market traders and the weak dollar that is drving up the cost of a barrell of oil. The U.S. DOES NOT pay $120.00 for a barrell of oil, this is the price on the futures market. This is the real kick in the pants. We are paying close to $4.00/gallon because of WHAT might happen in the future. The governement (fed reserve) needs to stop lowering interest rates and sending out inflation worries to the market. Until this happens, oil will continue to rise.
I predict this country implodes within the next year. Where's a good terrorist attack or hurricane when you need one Someone/thing needs to wake this countries powers that be up, they are bringing the unrest and economic turmoil of the late 60's early 70's back.

Thanks for your replies, well, for most of them at least. I still might end up with a more economical 2nd car though at some future point.

Working out of the house and not having a commute probably saves me hundreds of dollars in gas a month. Plus, I get a car allowance every 2 weeks. It by far and away subsizes my gas throughout the month.
Im also an avid video conferencing user and had it in my house for the past 5 years. It requires no gas and my company pays for my network connection. Im meeting with a client in WA next week over video rather than flying there. Not only do I sell video conferencing and Telepresence technology, I use it. I dont mind traveling but air and windshield time are extremely unproductive aspects in day to day life, in my opinion. But they are facts of life for many people.
I could see myself driving a Prius down the road.

I drove my TT 4200 miles last week.
29 mpg @ 75 mph
26 @ 85
22 @ 100
18 city with occasional boost
I have no other vices or pleasures that are so economical. Tires probably cost me as much per mile as gas.

I will keep my 993 even if all I can do is stare at her. Food will be the bigger worry with $7 a gal gas.
I am SO looking forward to less traffic!
I am close to my job and in a city with fantastic public transportation. My legs work and my bicycle rocks.
No worries here.
I do pity folks that make less than 50k a yr as they will be hurtin' bad.
