Default Windshield protective film now available

My local protective film installer (Protective Film Solutions, Scottsdale, AZ) is now offering a 4.5mm film for windshields.
I don't have the cost of the installed product yet.
Check it out:

For $100 (deductable) I get a whole new windshield (and the ability to inspect the cowl for corrosion). I think if I autocrossed/tracked my 911, I'd be singing a different tune. Let us know the price when you find out...an interesting proposal, nonetheless.

Insurers in NJ do not have to offer windshield coverage (my carrier, USAA, doesn't at least), so it's a good option to have when replacing a windshield. God knows our OEM windshield pit very easily so if this is available in my area, I would definitely consider it.

4.5 mil is pretty thin. How much protection would it really provide. I haev the 40mil protection on my headlights, and even with that one of my lights was smashed. (not sure what really happened, my wife took the 993 that day, and recalls something falling off a truck in front of her, but she thought it bounced over the car. our best guess is that it hit the headlight before it went over, lucky for her it didn't hit the windshield.
anyway, my point is that even with a layer that is nearly 9 times thicker, my lense was demolished by a road hazard. Becomes a numbers game...

As far as I can tell, it will only protect against small rocks and chips.

I'll be on board only after I drive a car with it! Hopefully it will not yellow like the older stuff.

What's the point of the stuff? If it's meant to be replaced every few years as it gets more and more chipped up, then that makes sense. It could be a very good idea considering the ridiculous cost of our glass.

A windshield in the desert is sandblasted beyond belief in a short period of time.
My original windshield is still in perfect condtion, so that is why I am considering it.

My NJ insurer has replaced my windshield 3 times in the past 5 years, and never batted an eye or raised any rates. $100 deductible, which I have to pay sometimes.

I have a friend who encased his entire GT3, except the roof, in the 3M clear bra stuff, including the windshield. It is holding up very well.

The installer got back to me with a price earlier today.

Damn, that is one expensive piece of plastic.

How much is it just for the film? Two people should be able to apply it very easily.

The $595.00 includes installation.
The installer orders it from the factory. They do not cut it on site like window tinters.

He won't sell only the film.
His business is based on installed products
