My car, an early 95, does indeed have the 964 style cam gears. However there are no pins locking it to the rear sprocket, so it appears it still relies on friction to maintain it's position.

Can anyone else comment on the "push the hood crest to close the hood" technique that porsche recommends? Ive always read thats a bad idea - but now Im wondering if thats just a legend..

I have akways pushed the hood crest on both the 993 and Boxster without issue. My main reason is I don't want to leave marks on the paint. I have heard too that this should not be done. I suppose there is concern that it could loosen the crest. I replaced the OEM crest with a silver one on the 993. If it is ever lossened it would be an easy fix.

Here are a couple.

1) The word Varioram was not cast onto the intake until about half way through the '96 production year.

2) Turbos actually sit 40mm further back in the engine compartment compared to NA cars...

Closing the front hood by pushing on the emblem is a bad idea. The emblem has a convex curve
across it's face and this will bend in after repeated closings. I had to replace mine it was pushed in
so much. I use my fingertips (spread out) to close both front and rear hoods. I place them in the
areas where the hood frame is backing it up. Fingerprints? That's what quick detail sprays are made
for, or use a towel under you fingers.

I just slam my hood really hard to minimize pressure on the crest.

I just tried it for the first time - wow! So little force required - and no fingerprints on the hood. It's like a different car.

How do you guys close the rear lid, is it the same way as the front, or do you let it slam down?

I removed the decklid shocks (weight savings) and just let the stupid thing slam shut by itself. Sometimes it refuses to catch properly, so I just step on the edge with my foot.

funny you mention that, because I was thinking of sanding off the paint from the decklid, or even removing the whole decklid for weight savings

Seems rather abusive to such a nice car.

use the heel palm of your hand-face away from front -put heel of hand in front of crest and squat and push down-has worked for me since 1996-emblem stays in perfect condition
