That' a very generous offer, thank you. As a matter of fact I had decided to go with Equus but didn't know which one. Why did you pick the 3140 over the 3130?
There is a fair jump in price to go up to the 3140 but then it looks like it will do pre-OBDII cars also.

When it comes to OBDII, I prefer dynamite, C4 and a sledgehammer myself. Had a nightmare on my 1996 cab that I will save for another post, but it took me a year to get it all straightened out. Thank God Porsche NA took care of it for me.

Just to be sure, do both the ACTRON 9180 and the EQUUS 3130 not only tell you the 993-specific code numbers but ALSO what the cose means, i.e. SAI left back, say? And what is to choose between these two if they both do this? I gather the EQUUS has a USB 2.0 connector to a PC and thus you can print out hard copy. DOes the ACTRON 9180 have this?

Charlie the 9180 will tell you what most of the codes mean. There are some newer ones for the 07 and later cars which you only get the code # and will have to look it up or call your service guy for a translation. The Actron also shows you live data and will save a run log which you can download to your computer. I have not bothered to try that feature

the 993 diagnostics manual says that to set cycle flags, load value should be in certain ranges specified in ms - for example, .9 to 1.9 ms - most of the readers that I have seen read out in % - anyone have a clue what the relationship between ms and % is?
second question - which of these tools will display the individual cycle flags? I understand that the BOSCH Hammer (and later) tools will not only show the cycle flags but display the timer countdown so you know how close you are getting to setting each flag

Actron 9185 won me over ebay 170 incl free shipping. Has live data graph function which is hand for understanding trends at a glance, back lite and can download log to PC for printing or storage very simply....rugged & recommended.
