Default Can i mix tires? Also, need help.

Just had a nail puncture my passenger rear (oooh that is funny) on my 95 c4. I have p-zero's from the previous owner but they are 1/2 to 2/3 gone in the back with the fronts in much better condition at about a 1/4 gone.

I see three scenarios - can you all comment?
1) replace the one rear tire with a pirelli, that would give me 100% tread on one rear and 40% tread on the other; 60% tread in the front

2) replace both rear tires to have equal (100%) tread; i would still have 60% tread on my front tires; most likely I would use another brand of tires since the p-zeros are expensive and aren't wearing well

3) i replace all four tires and sell the p-zero's. this is exactly what I don't want to do because of cost.

So what is the best solution? 1, 2, or 3 (or another solution) and why?

Big thanks
Mike

Personally, I always stay with the same brand and type of tire front and back. Some say you can get away with different types front and back, but never on the same axel.

Have you considered a more value for money tire? TOYO make a reasonable performance tire, their PROXEY (spl?) series. They may not be quite as good as Pirelli, but worth thinking about if you are looking for value. At the end of the day tires are a very important part of your car and 4 new TOYO's will always be better than mixed brands.

Two new rears that match the fronts, which should wear out at about the same time as the 60% fronts....OR, four new tires. You do the math to see what works best for your budget.

+1 - I'd go with two new rears that match your fronts.

I've always heard that you should match the tire brand all the way around.

Search on this one because we had a GREAT argument about it a few months ago...

I was in the "it's okay to mix" camp.

Cool

Get new rears that match fronts...but I don't think this is what you want to do.

BF Goodrich sells a 17" Z rated summer tire, low noise, high grip for about $500 a set. Search for them on Tire Rack.

Brother Martin, I guess we wore you down! Praise the Lord!

The ironic part, you can get a good set of tires fort a Porsche for about $500 if you shop around...the BF Goodrich 205s and 255s I am thinking about.

I won't respond to this thread any further...let them mix and match tires...you see it all the time where the low life's congregate! Take that 150,000 mile 993 with a salvage title out on the road, push it hard with some crazy mix of tires...you get what you deserve when something unpredictable happens.

Gott en Himmel, why do I even respond to these idiotic threads.

Cool I gave up because....

the poster's sad story about not being able to afford a set of tires for a $30,000 Porsche car....that is why I was so kind. But now you have me going again...my revised advice, go to your local cheapo tire store. Look for some.....I just can't do it, you did it, your wore me down

But regardless...very humorous slant by that rascal Mark in Baltimore....

Can i add that i believe i have read somewhere that for a C4 its also important to have the same tyre wear accross an axel.

I.e having a part worn tyre on one side and a new one on the other side can cause problems with the 4x4 system.

Best to check your manual.

I am going to buy two new p-zeros. Seems like the easiest to do. Next set will be ps2's.

I have heard the same thing - you should have same tread wear on both sides.
