I have read multiple threads relating to this, but no definitive answers. I currently have Pirellis Zero front and rears. The fronts have some good life left in them but the rears are almost worn out. Why can't I put some Michelin Pilots in the rear while waiting for the Pirellis to die?
Will that truly create a dangerous situation?
The car is mostly a DD, with an autocross here and there. I do want to take it on the track in the near future though.

"some good life"? Notwithstanding the performance considerations, balance that against two separate trips to the wheel shop to get them mounted. The waste of time factor might lead me to give up on a few $ worth of remaining treadlife, especially for a daily driver.

For a DD, mixing tires is no big deal. For the track, I would want the same tires on all 4 corners. An autocross we be a good way to find out the effect of having mixed tires front to rear.

I just ordered 2 Michelin Pilot SX MXX3 N0 from Tire Rack to go on the rear and match my fronts that have maybe 10K miles left. While at Tire Rack's web site I came across a very handy all-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about-tires thing: scroll down and click on The Tire Rack Owner's Manual under downloads and you'll get a page with a pull-down menu where you can find a lot of useful info on tires, including Mixing Tires. Of course Tire Rack is in the business of selling tires so they're going to try to get you to buy 4, but the technical info I think is probably correct. I agree with techno, on a DD probably no big deal, but at the limit....

So you guys are saying you should be ok mixing tires on a 993? What are the great results you will get?

I once had Bridgestone S02's in the rear with S03's in the front. They have different tread patterns and I noticed no negative effect in handling or road noise.

I don't have any experience with mixing two completely different tire brands though, sorry.

dictates that you replace with the same brand, or transition to a new brand with all four (4) new tires. You are NOT driving a goddam'd Pinto, it's a PORSCHE 993.

You know you can walk around with different shoes on your feet. Why on the left foot, you could have a nice shinny wingtip from your grandpappy, and on right foot, assuming your feet differ left to right, you could wear a clown shoe. It would be functiuonal, but, you'd look like an idiot...get my drift????

I just had this discussion with my mechanic (a very knowledgeable guy). I need new fronts and he strongly advised against varying from the tires on the rear, so I am sticking with the same tires. If I change in the future, I will change all four tires.

What about on a toyota minivan? I have some toyos on the front but are having a hard time finding them for the rears. Mix and match on a minivan okay?

I'm currently running Conti Sport N1s at the front and N2 at the back.

I've been on track a few times and have not noticed any untoward handling characteristics, but then I'm not a racing driver or very experienced on track.
