When?

I think it was around 1967.

It took a while and I finally got one in 2009. I was having too much fun with motorcycles prior to getting my 993. The story "A long time dream come true".

I wonder where Porsche got the idea for this commercial.

Porsche Commercial

I starte thinking about buying one soon after high school 1970, but didn't get my first one, a 1964 356C rust bucket in 1975 after graduating college in1975.
Have owned several since.

I had the classic poster of the cut away drawing of the 930 on my wall when I was a kid and everyone else had the Countach poster in the 80s. Yes, I also had the Farrah Fawcett poster! The 930 poster is still hanging in my garage BTW. Grew up, had kids ( that turned into teenagers), and decided it was the right time to buy the P-car. Got my 993 last fall just before the bad weather forced me to put it away for the winter. Guess I was born with the car nut gene and knew I would someday own one.

17 or so would drive 25 miles to dealer just to look at one. The clincher was a 1981 Silver Black Turbo sticker price around $48,000.00 might as well been a million for me but made the promise I would own a 911. For me my 993 c2s in Met Black is as good as it gets.

I had an early 930 Matchbox car when I was a kid in the early 80s. I still have it. Built several models including a 930, 911 Speedster, and 356B Carrera 2 Cabriolet. You know, come to thing about it, I might have a 917 Spyder, too. I have been a devout VW fanatic since I was 2, and I really fell in love with Porsche when I was 8 when my dad's colleague gave me a copy of "Small Wonder: the Story of the Volkswagen" and I discovered that Ferdinand Porsche created the VW.

Some time around 1984. That's when the local Benz dealership was a Benz/Porsche dealership and my grandfather purchased his first luxury car, the 190E. He always talked about how great German cars were and always took me to the dealership with him when he went in for service and the salesmen let me take all of the brochures. I decided that the Porsches were cooler looking than the Benzes so that's what I wanted.

Default as long as I can remember...

I have childhood friends that tell me, they remember me talking about Porsche's in elementary school. That would be in the mid-late 60's-since I'm soon to be 49. My actual first encounter was with a local restaurant owner who had a lime green I think, 70-71 Targa. COMPLETELY different from anything I had ever seen/heard before.

In a dream once, I went back to very early in my life, when I was still in diapers and using a pacifyer(sp). I was holding my binky at chubby little arms length and in my mind I was saying...man that's a good looking WB binky, look at those curves!

Then I flashed forward to adulthood, blasting thru a serpentine set of twisties, with the flat six behind me singing the chorus.

Then, I wet myself.

I bought a Porsche for no specific reason---was debating between a Porsche and Dodge Viper.

I wanted a sports car, I bought one. There has never been any connection, obsession, life changing moment that made me want a Porsche.

Its just a cool car in my world.

1968
8th grade teacher bought a 912. He knew I was into cars and took my for a ride during recess.
It took me nearly forty years to get one.
New ones do nothing for me.

Great thread, and glad it has been revised. Now my story....

I grew up before the 911's (tells my age), but I was infatuated with Porsches when my friends were Corvette people. In college all I could do was admire the Porsches (no $$$$). Get married and still intrigued. Find what I can afford... a '67 912. Closest thing to a 911 at the time. Great car and looked just like the 911's of the time. But as the family increases, the car decreases.

Fast forward 35 years, and am driving a MINI Cooper, and going to the race track (VIR). As I walk through the paddocks and am admiring the Porsches, as well as other cars, I get the urge again. "Unfortunately" when I returned home, I look on my friend's website and see that he has a '67 912 for sale. (History repeats itself). Of course, I have to relive my younger years and purchase the 912. Spending over a year restoring it, I renew my Porsche interest.

About a year ago, I spotted a 993, that I like the looks of. While my 912 gave me a great car to work on, and draw a lot of attention and comments from friends and stranges, I would like to have the 993 to drive longer distances in more comfort. While I still have the MINI and love to drive, this is the closest thing I can have to a "mistress". Entere the 993.

Now the garage has a MINI, 912, and 993... and my wife's car. So unless I get rid of my wife I am limited to the Porsches that I have.

In 1970, my sister's boyfriend let me drive his 1969 912. I was amazed at the handling and tightness of the car, compared to my 1967 Mustang GT. It just needed a bit more power. In 1972, I found a pristine 1970 911E and sold the Mustang. The 911E eventually became an IMSA RSR... fun, but a dumb thing to do to such a pretty car (it was burgundy, a fairly rare color and not unlike my Arena Red). Dang... I wish I had kept the 911E as stock, and kept the 67 Mustang!

It all started when I was about 7yr old In 1969 my uncle went from a Karman Ghia to a 912. Then a few years later in 1974 my cousin bought a 74 911Targa and then later bought a new 1977 930 Turbo Silver with Gold BBS Wheels. After that I was truly hooked on Porsches and my goal was to own a 911. In 1989I purchased my 1st Porsche a 1980 911SC Targa Blk on Blk.

In 1983 I was in second grade and waiting outside elementary school for my mom to pick me up from school. While I waited, my friend's mom picked her up in a new '83 triple black 911 SC Cab. I will never forget hearing the whiny mechanical music of the engine is she coasted slowly down the hill away from school in first gear - the fuchs wheel lips and black paint shining in the sun. If it sounded that good coasting, I could imagine how good it sounded accelerating. I hjave since then been in love. Sadly, to this day I still don't own the black air-cooled Cab that I dream of...so if someone wants to sell me theirs, please let me know...

I did get to drive my buddy's dad's 944 Turbo on several occassions in high school and it gave me a rush.
