Default Brake squeal...again

My rear brakes were squealing pretty hard, especially when they are hot. My Indie took them apart, cleaned them, sparyed something on them, and put them back together.

2 hours later and $200 later, the brakes still sqealed.

to his credit, he warned me before hand that it was a long shot.

any opinions this topic, and the $200
TIA

Are you running stock disks and stock pads? Do you have the spiders installed?

I know for front brakes the pads/disks/spiders seem to work together to make the brakes quiet so that should also work for the backs.

Cheers,

Mike

If you pull the pads and file down the leading edge of the brake pad so it is slightly rounded off. Then clean the back of the pad(caliper side) and the caliper piston with brake cleaner and a cloth so it is perfectly flat with no dust residue. Now put a dab of anti brake squeel on the back of the pad and let it set up until tacky then re insert your pads and enjoy squeal free braking.

I tried all sorts of squeal shims, compounds, lubes, filing, etc to get the squeal to go away. As it turns out, the brake calipers have tiny optical sensors embedded in them that can read the label on the back of the brake pads... if they don't say genuine Porsche on them then they activate tiny metal reeds that vibrate against the rotors at near supersonic speeds. This is to create such a racket that you take your car back to the dealer. Since they heard you coming a mile away, they've already prepped a new car for you to buy to get you out of that "money pit." How generous of them.

Ok, maybe it doesn't work like that... but only the real deal Porsche Textars run squeak free. "OEM" Jurids squeal like a stuck pig. I'm now running OE Porsche Textars without any shims, spiders, etc., against (non-Porsche label) Zimmerman rotors and have zero squealing. You may find some other posts too reporting that only the real deal original Porsche Textars will not squeal... I've found it to be true.

It's been a year since I had my major brake overhaul done by a supposely reputable indy but its now squeaking again...
I think he put on Zimmerman rotors!
Does this mean I ask for replacement with OEM Porshe Rotors? ****e ****e, ****e...

I replaced my pads/rotors about two months ago....All facotry stuff, Textar, etc as recommended here... I left the spiders off (Because I forgot to order them and the old ones didn't come off well) and everything was fine for about a month. Then I picked up a squeal on one corner and ONLY when the ambient temp is below 60 degrees. I'm about to do the ROW suspension upgrade and guess I'll tackle the squeal problem then.*Sigh*

Encountering similar angst, although the squeal is short and sporadic. Jackrabbit starts with attendant engine howl seems to make everyone in the vicinity forget about the brake noise, heh heh.

For future reference, you want pads and rotors to come in box with Porsche written on the side and originating from a Porsche dealership. OEM pads from Textar and Pagid are not the same composition as the OE pads those companies make under license for Porsche. And there is also no reason not to use the spiders and brake pad wear sensors unless you are frequently changing out pads for DE or Auto-X. Our brakes weren't squeaking when they were delivered from the factory so there is no reason they should do so now.

What are spiders (and don't say arachnids or S&P 500 synthetic)?

They hold the pads in David. They're little metal cups with legs that make them look like spiders that glue to the backside of the pad and are retained by slipping the legs into the caliper piston centers. Major PITA and I don't use them, but I run Textars too.....no squeal.

I'm fighting it too. My biggest problem is brake rotors are expensive as hell to ship from the states...

And this exchange rate is killing me slowly...

Word.

Your trusted indy is not "wrong" in any real sense. It's just that not many know what Jason just mentioned. I've been down this road long ago ...and learned the hard way. The money I "saved" in avoiding the cost of OEM pads I more than lost in having to buy OEM pads
For whatever reason, "Textar" from aftermarket is not OEM Textar in an OE box.

As for the anti-squeal spiders, your call. Again, Jason is correct in advising that there is no "need" to omit their use ...it's simply an easy-of-swap measure for we track-rats (though the sensors really are a waste of money for anyone, IMHO). Done with the right components, you will have noise-free brakes.

FWIW, I use OEM pads and rotors w/o said spiders and have never had squeal. All the goop out there is junk EXCEPT LubroMoly's hi-temp grease in a tube. This (w/o the spider) have given me years of squeal-free braking.

I put in Pagid street pads with factory rotors. They were quiet for a short while, then started squealing badly at low speed. Put the old spiders back in and it took care of 95% of the squeal. Enough so that it is acceptable, at any rate.
