Rufus has a nice factory option carbon fiber, 4-spoke steering wheel... black but with a gray airbag. Can I dye it black? Anybody want to trade? Anybody want to sell a black one cheap?

I have a black vinyl one if you want. Make me an offer as I don't know what one would fetch. I would try dying it for sure since you are getting rid of it anyway. Call Ray at RPM - he might have a leather one lying around or even LA dismantlers. I would think Rufus, as demanding as he is, would want leather.

How can I tell if my airbag is leather or vinyl? Will "leather" dye work on vinyl? Where does one buy the dye? I can get a new one for $189... Wouldn't you just be proud to know your airbag was on a Turbo R? How can I reach RPM?

Steve, I have the airbag (black vinyl) from my 964 that you can have for free. As I understand it, it's not legal to send these critters though the mail or UPS, so you would need to take a drive here up to get it (or find someone who's doing the trip).

Tom,
Nice offer... I've been told that the 96+ airbag is different from the 95, so I would wonder if the 964 would fit the 96+ wheel. There's something about the "depth"...
Thanks.

Assuming it's leather, you can have it dyed black & it'll be fine. I've seen dyed leather airbags & they are (at least to my eye) indistinguishable from the factory finish. In a car of that caliber I would have it professionally dyed to assure a good even color match. Ask a high end auto upholstery shop or dry cleaner who in your area does the best work.

This one looks pretty spiffy, if not a tad pricey:

Thanks for the help. Mine looks like vinyl, and has that black smudge at the top. I tried Fantastic, but it didn't help the smudge.
There must be a way to dye vinyl.

Steve, just try and remember what the black smudge came from, and just try and create a bigger smudge, to cover the whole airbag...
Or I think Surflex has been mentioned as a reliably good product that will dye both leather and vinyl....But I dunno, I still think that nice stitched leather airbag would suit a car of Rufus's caliber...

Steve, vinyl dye comes in aerosol cans and sprays right on. Any of the major parts stores will have it in black. Mark
