Just took mine to the welder, I'm going with 2" pipe (my neighbors all make more noise than I do, especially the garage band next door..). I did the
baffling removal a while back so they should sound just about like Leland's.
I'm going to try to prepare a cut-out in the heat shroud so I can continue to use
it, seems like they are there for a reason. I'll post photos probably on Monday.
Next mod will be an internal bypass on another set of mufflers, we'll see how that modifies the sound. Thanks for the posts guys, this seems like a really cost-effective way to improve the sound of these cars.

Ed,

Looks like you are a former 993 owner...are you still working on a variable 993 muffler? You are going down the same track I am thinking of. Thanks for the lead on Burns Stainless....they seem to have all of the pieces parts to make this work. I haven't found the electric valve for less than $350 so far though.

Let me know what you are cooking up!

Cheers

Bruce, I am indeed a former 993 owner, but I'll be picking up a '96 Aventurine Green coupe on Monday - back in the saddle again!

I was going to do a DIY muffler rework a la RSRs, but the external bypass is nice and simple. And allows for the cutout... I looked at using Quicktime Performance's valve, available for about $300 the pair. That takes a standard hotrod 3-bolt flange of 2.25". Not knowing what size the 993 pipe is, I assumed it would need a couple of adapters, which are more expensive than straight tube - is the 993 tube also 2.25"? This would reduce cost considerably.

So then one has a variable valve in the exhaust, able to go from full muffler to full bypass. Add a rheostat or multiposition switch over the radio and voila. Quiet in the nabe, loud on the road, open on the track...

Just got mine back from being welded, used the 2" pipe and saved the
heat shield. They really sound good, throaty with a great rumble at idle.
Next time I'm going to do the internal bypass and see how that sounds.

Hi Bruce,

The mod looks very professional. Can you do a sound clip (or just a digital camera video clip) so we can hear it.

If the pipe went on the inside would there be room for it? Presumably the old one would be junked?

Sorry to be the one to raise this but what are you guys doing about insurance as presumably with an obviously modified exhaust the insurers will want to know?

Cheers,

David

Caveman,

Not in the USofA... You should see the junk that's insured...a small muffler mod does not change anything..

I know (used to live in Bedfordshire) that the UK insurance Co's are a nightmare. Adding a stripe down the side of the car classifies as a "modification" and an excuse to bend you over!

Why don't you get the mod done, and then claim that its the "motorsound package" that you bought off ebay.... who would know?

Clive.

Right David, here in the USA we're pretty much free to modify things after the catalytic converter.
I'll try to post a sound file. My muffler guy assures me he can do it from the inside of the muffler, I hope to give him another set of mufflers next week to try that one. We'll see.
The sound is great, really throaty with a rumble like you want all 911's to make.
I never could get used to the 993 stock sound (being used to early 911's and sport mufflers etc.). This makes it sound right to me.

Yea, I'll post a better photo of those wheels tonight. They are HRE's. Can't remember the number. Great fit and I like the look. They were on the car when I bought it a couple of years ago and I've gotten to the point where I like them more than at first.

Hi Bruce,

Do you think your "new" muffler will make sound (92db) at Laguna? My rsr's are great, but on the quiet side...

Thanks,
Pete

Leland, nice approach for modding the mufflers. I've seen a similar approach done on the stock C5 Vette mufflers. How does your sound now compare with the RSR's?

I wish I knew, I've never seen RSR mufflers. Someone in a more civilized (993 rich environment) will have to comment on the comparison.
