Hey Jeff96-993 me too!

Except mine was a coupe came in three differnet shades (a blue and a green front quarter wraping a tan body)and it was all held together by rust.

Bought it from my brother for $200 and drove it for 2 years until one day when I put it into park and all I could hear was the planitary whirl away - had it towed by one of those "we'll take anything" comapnies for $25.

Next though was a '69 108 WB alpine white Chevy Van - I don't have the time to recant all the memories of that flat six three-on-the-tree machine...

First car was a Fiat 128 Sport! (now I now why I call Ferrari's "Fix It Again Tony"s). That was a total piece of cra*.

But at the same time I drove a 19?? MiniCooper S with a 1293cc hand built racing engine...used to blow away 240Z's! Had the engine parts shipped from the UK and built locally. I had to stop driving it after we had the big fire when it coughed back through the weber carbs because the cam was too wild......

mpm'95,

I hope the picture brings back memories!!! I painted my car every year to get rid of the parasitic rust problems...winters can be hell in Ohio, at least on a car. And I learned so much about taking care of a car...the Buick was much more demanding than any women I've ever met!! One fraction of a second of neglect and the car would just say "to heck with ya" and quit running. I spent more maintenance time with that car than actually driving it. There was one stretch where I was towed home three times over a one month period. Every time the car was up behind the tow truck we would always come across this one certain guy on the road. After a month he finally caught up to me to talk with me, and he was convinced that all I did was tow my car around town....he'd never seen me actually driving the thing, just towing it behind that truck.

1970 MG Midget, white with black top and interior, wire wheels. What a blast! Never drove a stick before but learned quickly. I spent a lot of time screaming around southeastern PA - just watch out for the Amish! Learned how to synchronize carbs and how to jury-rig the electrical system (Lucas, need I say more?). Now I have my dream car...

My very, very first car was a Porsche 356 model by a German toy manufacturer called "Schuco". I was 5 years old at the time. It was a red convertible.
Guess this was really the ultimate root of my Porsche addiction since it was only about 5 years later that my Dad got his VW/Porsche dealership in Bakersfield. My first "real" car was a light blue VW beetle which I got from my Dad, and then finally my first 911SC. Notice: all air-cooled and rear-engined.

Cool

Both and if I could only find my old Layla tape (Derek and the Dominos) I'd be set for the rest of my life.

So you know how to double-clutch. I had a '63 Alfa at one time - it was well into POS stage when I acquired it, but the synchros worked just the way they did when the car was new (That is to say they didn't work at all).

A few 1967 model designations above, mine was a 1967 MGB-GT, BRG with the infamous Lucas electrical problems. Bought for $300 and sold to a friend for $50 to be used for parts for his 1967 MGB-GT.

A year before my 16th birthday, I started rebuilding the '71 buick skylark which was bought new by my grandpa, driven by my dad, my 3 older sisters, and then passed on to me. Even though it was painted in poop brown, I loved that car.

1980 Chevy Caprice Classic Station Wagon. Diesel. Two-tone cream and tan. It doesn't get more uncool than that!

One I could drive on the road? 1970 Austin America.

Freshman year in college. A local charity was raffling off a brand new 1970 Austin America (imagine a king-size Mini). For $1, I figured what the heck. Well, I won the sucker! To say I was on Cloud Nine would be putting it mildly! Now, down to the real world; freshman weren't allowed to have cars on campus. So, Dad and a buddy came up to pick it up and drive it down to our home in NJ. He then brought it in to the DMV to get it titled and registered. The clerk naturally noticed the out-of-state paperwork, and knew the NJ sales tax hadn't been paid. So, she asked Dad, "How much is the car worth?" He, being ever truthful, said "One dollar". The clerk then responded "OK, 5 cents tax, please".

It should be noted that this car was great; tracked straight as an arrow on the interstates (little 12" tires acted like gyroscopes, I guess), you learned to drive it like an 18-wheeler (floor the gas when you see a hill 5 miles ahead so you can be doing something like 55 at the top), after driving for an hour or so the gas pedal felt like you were stepping on the sharp end of a railroad spike (Alec Issigonis designed it along with the Mini; one of his theories for staying alert is you have to be a bit uncomfortable), and it taught me everything I now know about vehicle troubleshooting (and how and when to wield my 32 oz. ball peen hammer). Great elecrical system; two fuses protected the entire car. I even added an oil level gauge (even now how many cars - other than traditional 911s - have one)? Installed an oil pressure gauge; on right hand turns when oil pressure dropped to zero, knew it was time to add a quart or so. Generally happened about every 300-500 miles.

My first car was an 1981 Renault 5! It was a sailing boat with skinny tires which I slowly modified to the Alpine Turbo standard! Man oh man this thing would explode after 4000 rpm! Less than 900kg with a single turbo producing around 100+ hp all at ones at about 4500 rpm!!! Who said that a 930 has Turbo Lag!!! You should have seen my car!!! Scared myself silly one too many times and tore up those front tires in no time! Thinking about the stupid things I did back then I still wonder how come I'm still around these days!!! This thing was bullet proof and it is still around today!!!!!
