Red face

my first official car was a 1981 honda accord sedan. although, technically, my first set of wheels was a work truck my boss let me use before i got my honda. it was a 1978 ford f-250 pickup with a bent frame from wear and tear from construction projects. it could really corner well, especially when you were trying to drive it in a straight line. i nicknamed it "the iron lung."

'86 Skoda Estelle 120LS bought in the early 90's from an acquaintance of my father for £275 (about $400).

52bhp of pure mayhem! You could drive everywhere with your right foot flat on the floor, and rarely be in danger of a speeding ticket.

Only problem was, watercooled engine at the back, radiator at the front, and yards of dodgy eastern bloc pipe in between. I soon lost count of the number of times it overheated...

Seriously, a fun first car, and it taught me the dynamics of driving with the engine in the back, leaving me wide open to my current P-car addiction...

1949 Oldsmobile convertible, no top, automatic tranny. It had been abandoned behind Lime Rock Lodge in the early 60's and we towed it home (Sharon, CT) and got it running. I drove it two summers and never had a top. I know exactly where that car is planted on the old family homestead, too!

Oh, you want a list? Well,

Ray,

Austin American...did you know that the clutch cover plate was magnesium? My friend had an American...great car...easy to pick out of the snow drifts when we missed a corner on a backroad somewhere. The procedure....get out, driver to front, passenger to rear, lift car, move car to roadway, return to seat, continue journey.

As far as the magnesium clutch plate, we learned that as we were trying to replace the clutch one summer...couldn't get two or three of the bolts loose so we applied a torch ....three seconds later the entire plate disappeared in a poof of smoke. We loaded the rest of the engine in the hatch, and towed the thing to a junkyard. And then found an Austin-Healey Sprite to occupy our time for a few more months....

Well, let's see....

'73 Buick Skylark (Granddad's)
'77 Camaro, V8, 4-speed (a lot of fun, but completely totaled it in a head-on)
'80 Ford Capri, V6, 4-speed (boring car)
'85 Honda Civic, 4 speed (affordable)
'87 Honda Accord, 2L, Auto (reliable)
'88 BMW 525i, Auto (great suspension & engine)
'94 Saab 900SE 2.5L, Auto (I don't like FF)
'98 Lexus GS300, Auto (So quiet!)
'01 Mazda MPV, 2.5L, Auto (So convenient!)
'96 Porsche Targa, Auto (couldn't find a 5 speed)

This is the first time that I actually went through all the cars that I owned. Considering that car is probably the 2nd most expensive item a person will buy in his life (most expensive is usually the house), it's kind of interesting...

1st was an 81(?) El Camino.

My second car was a jeep. Raised, big tires, the works. I remember having to drive my boss at the time to a function. She was rather petite so I had to lift her up to get her in. That went fine. We got to the event and it came time to get her down. I went to cup her waste to help her and she moved too quickly. I ended up cupping her, well, cups. She told me if I wanted to continue working with her, I should sell the car. I bought an Audi 4000CS soon after.

Thereafter:

92 mustang
95 mustang
95 explorer
98 explorer
98 expedition
95 993
00 expedition
01 540i

I gave the exp to my wife after my daughter was born.

First car I had the use of was a 54 Mercury (Montclair, I think) that my dad bought for me to learn to drive on, for $180. It was in shockingly good condition except for the paint, which we re-sprayed in the back yard. Except for the two-tone white top, which we left original because it still looked good. It had an overhead valve V8 with a 2 barrel carb, which we rebuilt with new rings and bearings. It had a 2 speed automatic, power brakes, and a tube radio that still worked. Pretty deluxe for 1954. It also had vacuum-operated windshield wipers, which were not so deluxe.

A year later I bought a car of my own because I needed something reliable to get to school and work on time. It was a 68 Ford Custom (downtrim from Galaxie) with all the normal power stuff, a/c, auto, and 390 with 2 barrel. I got it for $500 because it had been rear-ended pretty good. My dad pounded most of the dents out for free.

Man,
What a lot of cars you guys have owned! My very first car (1972) was a Reliant Scimitar GTE. Second car (1980) was a 911SC, third car (1996) my current 993 (which underwent an RS morph...)
