Default incredible prices on 993s

There is now an ad in the Rennlist classifieds for a 1998 C4S for $72,500. http://mall.rennlist.com/scripts/fea...uery=retrieval
The new 997s - reasonably equipped - are priced at ~$75,000 - and that's with a 50,000 mi. 4 year warranty. This makes no sense.

I'm close to throwing in the towel on this quixotic search for a good 993 coupe.

Too many thieves selling Porsches.

Ah the free market system. I have a black on classic grey 97 C2S, sport seat, litronics, Hifi, 26K,
I bought and ordered it new, no damage or paint, no track, no mods. All books and records, annual brake and oil changes. 55K. No excuses or stories. my direct email is jimc@jstco.com. Look at my feedback on eb*** under car commander.

There is also a 95 cab at Premier with 25k miles that they are asking $44.9k for! What's going on with prices?

Prices are arising folks. The 993 is the last aircooled porsche legend; a true collector car. The present owners are winners...

If you really want one, you'll have to pay the price. The present owners know what they have. Supply(low) and demand (high). Economics 101

As perspective to my price comments and to be more specific, last week I drove the new 997. It's nice. Strange steering wheel, and the interior console is WAY too busy, but the 997 is a nice ride. Can't beat a 4 yr. new car warranty.

I'm searching for a well-maintained, clean body, 1995-1997 coupe, sharp interior, reasonable mileage. Motor sound is a must, leather interiors are nice. Color - white is my first choice, I'll consider silver or a metallic color.

I'm not real interested in a super low-mileage car - as 993s were meant to be driven. Thus, I don't want to pay a premium for low mileage, then feel guilty every time I drive it (as drive it, I will). Narrow body is fine - as the premium for the wide-body won't add a thing to my driving enjoyment.

In plain language, I'm looking for a fun car that plasters a smile on my face when I turn the key. No more, no less.

Any help from the great contributors on this board would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
dale

Purely subjective...

I wanted a low mileage car and I drive it as often as I can. I wanted a widebody as it does increase my enjoyment. I wanted a 1998 model as they hold value the best.

Don't make motor sound a must have option on a car as it is probably the easiest option to add after you buy it.

If you are price sensitive than look at 1995 midels instead of low mileage 1998 widebodies....then can be half the price.

A beautiful condition 993 with low miles is not a dime a dozen proposition like buying a 996 where they made SO many more 996 cars! Market conditions exist, but you can ALWAYS find a great deal on a used 993 in exc shape if you're patient. It takes a long time to find a great deal sometimes. Check out cars.com. That's where I checked for mine, but I had to check EVERY single day for a couple of months.

Hang in there!

motor sound is super easy to add in OEM factory form, so dont let that drive your decision process...

the post about the black/grey at $55k sounds like a great deal given that it was ordered new, owned by one individual, all original/no mods, etc with low miles. Yes the 993 was meant to be driven, but I still think finding a car that has been driven low miles but meticulously maintained is a good thing. Just for another data point, my buying decision criteria were the following:

1997-1998 (i think these years will hold value the best)
Condition (wanted showroom new condition with squeaky clean PPI, etc)
Silver or white exterior with black interior (purely personal)
Less than 30k miles (i want runway to add some miles and still have the car be low miles for year)
Widebody S version

Almost all options can be added to the car...there are a few exceptions, and sometimes the adds are expensive aftermarket, but i just wouldnt let that be a decision factor as you can add them over time. I plan to add litronics, hi-fi, motorsound, and euro suspension over time....

It may not sell for $72,500 (or it might) but the facts are that 1998 widebody prices are rising....especially the low mileage, clean cars.

And yes...you did get a bargin.

Considering all of the above, I was thinking of selling my '95 993 C2 6sp Polar Silver / Black, Euro bumper, Motorsound, etc. 45k miles, Top condition

how much would you say it is worth ?

I have owned this car since 1997 and I have dealt with all typical 993 problems.
Changed master / slave cylinders, changed kinematic clutch level, replaced wiring harness, etc...
I recently changed all four tires (less than 1000miles) and last week changed rotors and had service (over $ 2K bill).

Thanks for your replies

RPM and Premier's cars are usually overpriced but this seems over the top even for RPM. I agree that 993 prices in general have been rising lately but not this much. I would think that maybe this car is worth 64/65k to the right buyer but not 72.5k with that mileage. If I am wrong ...great.. its all good for us that already own

MD993, in california, I would think that car would sell for between $33 and $35k. I just missed out on buying a car similarly set up for $33.5k and walked from one that had paint issues (not frame) at around $34 - $35k. Polar silver/black is an easy car to sell IMO. Killer combination!

Brian,

The point that I was making is that the asking prices have risen lately. I agree there is absoluitely no relationship between asking price and actual value but the fact that the asking prices is increasing indicates a higher demand and/or lower supply....with the end result being higher prices.
